SPORTS TYPE By STEVE ON ESCU Sports Editor WINNING EVENING dont suppose anything could have stopped Barrie Bay City Falcons last night Right from the start even prior to leaving for llleaford the attitude of the play ers gave me the feeling that this was Winning night it wasnt one of those smooth evenings by any means It was like in an old buggy that sputtered and coughed but never really stalled Take the start of the game late as it was through opening ceremonies which had Al Shewchuk called Sawchuk and Jim Cairns called Jim Kerns this bit seemed to relax the visiting Falcons whom we thought would freeze during the speechmaking As the first whistle sounded Barrie had only 12 players including goalie Don Rich in uniformVEarl McCrone and Ross Cameron didnt make the Jaunt for varying reasons Chuck Edward mysteriously at first didnt show on the ice ing period It was later learned that til very late in the open Edwards skates were in no condition for hockey His buddy Howard Forbes had attempted to give Chuck alesson in skatesharp ening and took the edge off the blades Through the game the Shorthanded Falcons dis played spirit hadnt seen in any of the four games this year They looked like group that wouldnt be beaten Nary line was intact Yet the fellows work ed hard and fast at making the three guys up front closelyknit forward line and the rearguards work ed their heads off To show how unusual this game was take this bit for instance Ken Robertson an offensiveminded de fenceman picked up all of Barries three penalties This is almost unbelievable Then too Dave Sanderson the best player of 13 good Falcons went without penalty for the second straight night This is not meant to say Davre plays it weird most days instead that officials usually have him ticketed for the sinbin any time he checks an opponent Dave did lot of good checking last night More outstanding was the factthat Falcons short handed as they were had more zip in thefinal 20 minutes For the first time the opposition in the finale this season they outshot The boys admitted their fatigue during this time but obviously didnt let Chevies in on the secret Falcons take deserved rest today and host Mid land tomorrow night at 815 JUST NOTES Niagara Falls Flyers left Barrie be cause of poor attendances such as only 1000 for some midweek home games There must have been some dandy rumbling down
