profit is there In hogs Some farmers will tell you that they made $000 or $700 profit per hog in 1961 while others claim only $100 or less profit How should one producer be able to make $700 and another loss than $100 have run across few cases that may point out some of these reasons First of all lets consider the fellow who only made $100 per hog profit this year Perhaps be marketed the majority of his hogs when prices were down in addition he marketed very few Grade hogs be cause his breeding stock wasnt up to scotch Hecould lose 5c per pound by selling when prices were low This will bring him in about $800 less per hog If his hogs were mostly grade Bs he lost the $300 government premium and the $150 market price differ ential per head between and hogs He may have mis judged the live weights oi the hogs and kept them week too long Consequently the pigs consumed an additional $150 worth of feed and occupied space that might have been used to start new batch With ibisikindHeturnsrsucbram week and increase your producer may even he want ing in the red What can he done about situatio erhaps George Munro general sales manager Molsons Brewery will address mem bers moo ogaProiiis Oiten Differ Timing Handlinglirefactors have large number of your the cure is more diLiicult than meets the eye First of all you should like having hogs on the farm lfgyou dislike hogs around and are only keeping them because you have to there is tendency to neglect them Secondly pig pens should also no disinfected between batches This will help keep the disease problem at min imum The next step Is to decide on the type of hogs you have The new grade hog standards call for long lcsn bacon type hog that will go Grade and not lose you $500 per head when sold If you are going out to buy better bonr nt sow pay particular atten tion to advanced registry scores Try to buy stock from pigs with an AR score of 90 or better ya cant do much about the price of hogs but at least try to hogs going to market at time when prices are highest brief recap of 1061 shows that hogs were lowest in price dur ing April and May and up dur ing the rest of the year The hog cycle varies but prices are usually good in midsummer and early winter The last step might hedont keep those hogs around an ex feed bill for nothing Try and get that grade and save yourself $500 or so per hog final thoughtdont blame the feed altogether for those grade hogs Heredity will have far greater effect on grades than the feed John Smith eats as much as former Jones and works just as hard too but he isnt as long and lean looking as Jones AR records fgswine are an excel 7511 uida initialisat or sow They indicate that this hoar or this sow comes from strain of pigs that pro duces high percentage of grade bogs How important is this to you If you market 100 bags year and 70 of them are grades to you of nimnt $35000 per year or $500 per grade hog H1 QUEBEC and many other interesting places planned
