children must live together in few crowded rooms there can be no quiet place for study in contrast in many home one or two schoolage chil dren have their own rooms They seem to have an ideal place for doing homework This room may be remote from where the rest of the family usually is Parents may require the child eight 12 or it to be in his room at regular time each night to dohis homework Then his par ents may assume that all is well and that conditions are ideal for his using his time effectively and for practicing good study habitsoften far from the facts alas Speaking of boy 15 who is barely earning his grades at school his father said Hes in his room every night after school He thinks he is working faithfully But have dropped in at times to find him iLtenlng to the radio or writing letter or lying on his bed asleep STUDY NEAR FATHER does serious reading or other mentaLwnnLneaity every eve ning that he have the lad spend an hour or two of his homework reside in New Lowell that just to have an older per son engaged in serious syste matic mental work in the boys presence should inspire this lad to do likewise The father was intrigued with the suggestion but aid he thought he would ask the boys permission to come to the boys room for his own reading and working After few months was told by the father that this plan seemed to be working well Its when tha elementary school child begins doing home work that akiilful guidance by parent may be most effective Often the child may do better in near room where his par ents usually are rather than in room remote from them While distractions should ha mided child may learn to work in the midst of the family learn to isolate hlrnself psycho logically especially when other members of the family are man tally busy PARENTS
