decision when you have choice of different ways to play hand The best you can do in such cases is weigh the merits of each line of play and choose the one most likely to succeed In many of these hands you can reach reasonable conclus loos about the composition of the opponents cards and go on from there towards your goal For example look at the line of play South followed in this deal to make three notrump West led spade dummy play ed low and East played the nine The first problem South faced was whether or not to win the trick If he had ducked the nine he was imprisoned he sent This othy in his stud to the Philip pians writing that he had no man likemlnded who will care truly for your stats Phillpplans 220 Near death Paul tells Tim oihy topasa on the things which thou hast helrd from Tue to Anglican march This is Labor Day weekend Unlike some of our holidays this one does not commemorate any particular event in our on tioonirorrellgioukilfegitath it is day set aside in recogni tion at one group of people In our society those whom we peak of In making up the ranks of labor infiltn original intent this day was designed to call attention to the place of the laborer in our society and to emphasize his right This pur pose prevails to this day for there will always be need for this emphasis But between the timewhen this day was first noted and our days many of the rights of labor have become recognized and are now established in our society Because of thll and because rights always Involve obligations the emphast of this day is incomplete and one sided if it does not in addition to the other call attention to fabors responsibility to society WIIAT IS CHURCH LINK But why Labor Sunday or in other words what has Church to do with this emphasis it to extremely difficult to get any degree of unanimity of opin ion in answer to this question There are those who say that it Is beyond or outside the sphere of the Church On the other hand there are those who insist this is the work of the Church that is to apply the message of the Gospel to all conditions of society However detailed this application may or mly not be to the everyday life of people few would deny that there is relationship between the two m1flmflm let us pinpoint our thinking to specific situation labor managemeot dispute It would Rem to some at least that it is not for the Church to speak to detail cnthe confused and intricate problems of laborman agement relations Most Chris tlan pulplts have not the com petence to do so Ind it is out side their sphere This does not mean that the Church is not concerned The Church is concerned about the whole of life and all that in flueoces life Surely nothing is more important to the average man than his work and the con ditions under which he works The Church must be aligned with and dedicated to the pur pose of God in Christ to unite all things in llim things in heaven and things in earth Ephesians 110 For the pur pose of creating this fellowship the Church has been entrusted with the ministry of rccoacilla tion which reconciliation brings about fellowship between man and God and results in fellows ship between man and man Of all the divisions in our so ciety today Perhaps none has rower edge than that which ulsts between labor and man agement Here is dividing gall which the Gospel can break own The Church will accomplish her farreaching objectives as aha devotes her energies to the bollding up of persons in the still more than to the working out of detailed plans which in 1152 analysis will bear the stamp of the persons who shan them The Gospel always estab lishes the sacredness of human personality as the determining factor in building programs nod the ultimate ground of right in all disputes line the Church anything to say to labor The answer will depend on how obstractedly or concretely We regard labor Certainly Hie Church has some thing to say to Ihe laborer 0N SAME GROUND The Church stands in the same relationship to management and has something to say to the employer To each the Church speaks on the same ground that is to persons The worker is real person and must be dealt with as such 50 is his employer The basic human nccd of the employer and his employee are the same To each irrespective of his position the Church must make known that all men and the work of every man stood un der Gods Judgment and at the some time are candidates for His redemption This is more than an abstraction Similarly Christian employ er should have ndiffcrent atti tude toward those who work for him from that of the employer who makes no profession of Christianity flame 191 its aim TRINITY CHURCH Collier Street Next to the edit Oftico Organist Mrs Roberts Trinity XIV Labour Sunday soo nahuni Cummnnlan 030
