ASSOCIATION HOLD ANNUAL MEETING AT LIBRARY HALL informality and group participa tion were the highlights of the an nual meeting of the Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Association held at the Library Hall herp on Monday June The value of arts and crafts and other forms of creative recreation was brought out clearly by Wil liam Cook of Toronto speaker of the evening He stated that re creation could be of three kinds an escape from drudgery compen sation for dull routine or job which was not particularly inter esting or an opportunity for ful filment of persons potentialich and powers The last named he stressed as most important for it involves contain qualitiesthe use of the intellect the emotions the will the conscience and the body itself Because of this it makes for the gmth of the person and widens his horizons and interests in life Great Conccm He stated that leisure was of great concern in our modern world because of the shorter hours of work and earlier retirement age now prevalent Due to medical advance life has been lengthened to such an cxlent that at this lime the relative increase in the population in the over60 age group is greater than that of the pre school age group Mr Cook felt that we needed to raise the qual ity of life as well as lengthen it and that this might be done to great cxtcnt through the creative use Of leisure time He stressed the cxcitcnicnl of learning by doing and of staying with an art or craft until per son has expressed what one really wants to express He said that it wasnt necessary to explain to someone what you have painde or created out of wood clay otc Sometimes putting label on your creation spoils it thing should be what it is he said and if it pleases you it is good In mak ing anything the basic form and characteristics of the medium should be emphasized and develop ed The things you have created yourself are punt of yourself and sometimes no payment in rmoncy would encourage you to give them away Mr Cook told the story of Dr Lindcman outstanding American educator and social philosopher Dr Lindcmen visit ed friend who loved to paint and became quite attached to one of his paintings He asked his friend if he could buy it The friend was insulted On Dr Lindcmans dc panturehe said however that if the doctor would send him set ting of eggs from special breed of hen from his part of llhe coun try design in meri al can be developed Other craft guilds in Ontario and Canada as whole are concerned about this too slogan for those interested in grafts which Mr Cook threw out to the group was Buy Hand made handmade article is always unique he said Delightful Exhibit Mr Cook had brought with him delightful exhibit of articles made by himself and members of his family These included beau tiful pottery jug lamp base and plate mode by his daughter sOme of his own wood sculpture and metalcraflt and wOven scarf made by his wife pair of original ebony maSkvs handcarved by Fred Perry of Green River and set by himself were exceedingly attrac tive He also showed the group sev eral shepherds pipes made of bam boo and cork and interestingly decorated He played few tunes on these and they produced haunting melody He told about the Pipcrs Guild of olden times in which people came together to make music for pure enjoyment He had tried makirlg similar pipes of cardboard too and had had con siderable success Bu Fair Plans Mrs Cavanagh president of the Simcoe County Artsand Cram Association chaired the meeting at which people from Alliston Orillia Churchill Midland Cree more Barrie and other parts of the county were present During the business section of the evening financial report was presented by Mrs Palmer oi Barrie Mrs Duke Orillia gave report on the sixth annual Quilt and Rug Fair to be held in Orillia during the last four days of July and pulse Collcy executive secretary of the Simcocv County Arts and Crafts Association reported on the years work Mrs Beaver of Barrie gave the report of the constitution corn rnittcc and the constitution as rc vised by ibis committee was adopt ed by the meeting Election of Officers The election of the council for the coming year summer staff this year Materials Were laid out for cork animals scrapleather toys finger painting small cone earrings book covers potato and felt prints leather knife holders etc There was also some interesting modelling clay which had been made out of stale bread crumbs flour rind alum This prov ed cxcellent for the modelling of small animals earrings and brooch es and when poster paint or nail polish was applied attractive ar ticles resulted Everyone tried at least three different types of crafts and the afternoon passed most en joyably as well as providing an opportunity to find out which Highway No ii in this district occurred recently George McLean Jr Orillia real estate dealer was driving toward Orillia at about 11 pm Betwucn East Oro and Hawksstone young buck dccr suddenlybounded out on the road from the east side of the highway Unable to stop In time Mr McLean crashed head long into the deer killing it in stantly It just seemed to come out of nowhere Mr McLean said To say was startled is to put it mildly Stopping his car he ran back to the body of the animal but be fore he could pull it Off the road southbound car ran over the carcass Conservation Officer Fred Rich ardson
