THE BARBIE EXAMINER MONDAY MAY 17 1954 Barrie audiences are notorious so they say Visiting performers have found them cold new residents have been amazed at their lack of any kind of reaction It has even been wondered if they are just too selfconscious to applaud It does Seem to bad when vis iting artist who is deserving of braves gets only patter of ap plause but when group of local performerswho are entertaining for the sheer love of the thing and not to make livingare faced with the lack of response the Arsenic and Old Lace cast met with Friday night it is time to take look at the people in the lhtllllt lor while after the cur tain went up on the first act of the Theatre Guild play it seemed as if nothing would bring laugh When it finally come there Was an almost audible sigh of relief from backstage Why local company should have to work so hard for laugh and meet with such poor round of applause at the end of an evening that represented the culmination of weeks of rehearsing is mys tery The opening night audience was small and from the cold and lisliy stare with which it fixed the plays cast it could have been made up of aislesitting critics Our infant little theatre took long time to get going again and its delicate child that needs ap preciation so that it wont fade away and die again town that has been as theatrestarved as Bar rie tar many years past should not only turn out in large numbers for Theatre Guild productions itshould comeprcpared to praise and not to bury the enterprise There may have been great Laval Rummage sale Friday May 21 to criticize about the audience than the play All this sounds and maybe the solution does not lie all with the theatregoingpuo lic As one supporter of the guild suggested after opening night crowded theatre is boost for group of actors Hay Fever had sellout audience for almost all of the three nights it ran Arsenic and Old Lace did not have as good luck running two nights in much larger auditorium The threeuright stand is not bad idea particularly wnen the rumor gets around that the play is sold out There is no doubt that the theatre would have been crowded fountth night for Hay Fever and Arsenic and Old Loco certainly maintained the high standard set by the first pro duction Its like the story you used to hear of the local business man whose store wasnt doing too well when it first opened up so he tried bit of psychology He used to lock the front door during the Sat urday evening rush on the main street and maintain loudly that the store was too crowded to hold any more customers for while When his strateg created lineup in front of the door he would on it and let few people inand retty soon he had all the business Rte wanted Golden wedding of local inter est was
