THE BARBIE EXAMINER FRIDAY MAY 1954 Greer llces Complete TryOut Practices Rooster III 16 Greer Aces defending champions of the Barrie district ladies softball wars have closed tryout sessions and an nounced their roster of 16 players for this season The league is scheduled to open May 17 and the Aces will settle away and trim the rough spots in preparation for the defence of their iaurels The starting lineup shows little change over the club that marched to the honors last season Notable absentees are first baseman Beth McLean and third baseman Marg MacFariand Theglatter is expect ed to join Orillia this campaign Lorna McLean who blossomed into capable catcher last year despite her youth was shooin for the position and Dorothy Miller undoubtedly the groups top hurler will again be the main stay of the mound There is no reason to believe this combination wont have better year under their belt than last season The vacant first base position has been filled by Verda Wilson She played with the Aces two years ago but didnt take an active part last season This is her first ven ture on the initial sack with the champions although she has played the position for teams in Orillia base The outfield will be patrolled by Hazel Wright in left Dorian Parker in centre and Ethel Reid in right Alternates included several new comers to the squad with the ex ception of Fern Campbell who the National Hockey League The announcement came from Jack Moffatt Gait president who issued the following statement At meeting of the executiw of the Gait hockey club held May it was decided that they would not enter into negotiations with Chicago for the 195455 scason The members want to give con sideration during the next 10 days as to other ideas of the operation of the club If no acceptable ideas are forthcoming during that it days the franchise will be sold or leased to another group in the city who are interested In the event that the present group decided not to operate the club next season it will definitely have settled its decision in time to enable new group to proceed with the drafting of players for next seasOn Recent Tumors that new group was interested in taking over the franchise if the present group dc cided not to Operate the club an other season appear to have been well founded Mofiiatt stated that new group definitely had expressed interest in operating
