rooms heated in the furnace and discharged under pressure to each individual room Since adequate pressure to over come resistance to flow is provided by the blower the ducts may be smaller and longer filters for re moving dtht may be used and greater freedom in placing supply and return registers is obtained In genpral velocities through sup ply and return registers are higher and special attention must be paid to avoiding drafts Individual re turn registers and ducts may be used and located where needed regardless of duct length Supply registers may he placed in floors ceilings or at low and high side wall locations In gencral high sidewall registers are preferred since they permit higher discharge velocities and do not interfere with location of furniture The blower must be low Humidiï¬er and fresh air connec tions may be used and the system may be operated as an air clrcu latlng and ventilating system in summer Radiator Systems Systems referred to as radiator systems are those in which the heating medium usually steam or hot water is circulated in an en tirely closed system of piping and of radiators or other heat trans fer units located in each room These units allow the heat in the heating medium to be transferred to the room by convection or radi ation or both Radiators should always be in stalled at the cold wall of room preferably beneath windows so that the warmed air rising above the radiator will mix with the cold air descending at the window and prevent it from reaching the floor Radiator installation at an inside wall promotes circulation In the opposite direction producing cold drafts across the floor Placement of radiators at the ceiling results in even less desirable conditions The present trend is toward lon ger lower thinner radiators placed at or near floor level along out side walls which produce ceiling air temperatures much closer to floor temperatures The extreme case of this is the new baseboard radiator Conventional cast iron radiators may be partially enclosed by me tal cabinets with grilles to im prove their appearance Output is usually reduced and the heating effect in the room may or may not be improved over the original radiator depending on the design Radiators maybe painted any desired color and with any paint that does not discolor with the heat The aluminum and bronze paints often used actually reduce the output of radialor by 10 per cent over other types of paint or enamel when used as the ï¬nal coat Holt Transfer Units other Than Radiators While at the time this was first written tubular cast iron radiators are accepted as adequate heating units certain improvements in rargflams up Magma the use of convectors and baseboard radiators The contractor consists of hor izontal on type heating unit in stalled in the base of metal ens closure chimney effect is pro duced in the casing air being drawn in at the bottom heated and discharged through openings in the front of the enclosure near the top Convectors are lighter more compact for the same output and produce low temperature diff erences from floor to ceiling One type of baseboard heating unit is essentially of the same gen eral construction as convector but reduced in size and increased in length so that it approaches in appearance and takes the place of the conventional baseboard Alr at is the floor is dravvn in at the but tom of the enclosure heated and discharged through the 10p pro viding effective air circulation and subsequent reduction in temper ature difference between floor and ceiling The thin blanket of warm air rising over the cold wall serves also to increase the wall temperature reducing the feeling of discomfort due to radiation of bodyheat to cold surfaces While the convector employs maximum of heat transfer by con vection this reduced to mini mum with the radlant or panel heating system In this type of system heating coils are construct ed in thewalls ceiling or floor of room so that theentire surface radiates heat to the room Surlt face temperatures must be kept be low 130° in walls and ceilings and 85° in floors Such panels are most satisfactorily heated at present with forced circulation hot water WAX FINISHING PLYWOOD Wax finishing of Douglas fir ply wood paner is quick and simple process that odd greatly to the natural beauty of the Douglas fir grain pattern and texture Simply apply ridge board Conversely when they are longer or where the hip rafter has vertical support from below the sige must be in creased For example hip rafter with span up to 12 feet should be one inch wider or two inches deeper than regular rafter If the span is over 12 feet the hip rafter should be doubled in width Hip rafters must be securely spik ed to the tap plates and ridge board The roof sheathing is join ed at the hip rafter Jack rafters are shorter than regular rafters and extend from the top plate to the hip rafters as shown in the sketch The spacing sine and species of material should
