centre above is IoI the President By no mOKLING We feel that there never was time like the present when we needed strong healthy overall farm organization Some may say that with numerous commodity groups we are over organized but this is not the case Our Federa tion is simply the mouthpiece for all groups at provincial dominion and international levels The foundation of our organization should be the local groups meet ing throughout the county Of which we have about 35 with 29 active Farm Forum groups We would like to see many more groups organized Too much is expected by too many of so few and we need more leaders at the community level Our Community Meeting Pro gram operates six months of the year providing Community Meetings once month in those rural areas partigipating in this educational work These monthly Community Meetings consist of film showing and discussion of local business one month and the services of an authoritative speak er on subject selected by the group themselvesthe next month Our two fieldmen Allan Lennox who services the southern sections of our County and Peter Naughton the northern sections are in at tendance at meetings of our organ ized groups and act as liaison Of ficers of our County office Our world today is highlyand and we as farmers representing Canadas basic industryshould be in posi tion to sit around one common ta ble and talk over our problems with other groups at every level of government This is possibly the only way to work outga system of parity prices which would be great benefit to all urban as well as rural people might men tion here that other groups such as labor industry and big business are thinking along the same lines Just couple Ofmonths ago the President of the Congress of Labor in the United States viewed with alarm the drop in farm prices and he went all out to point out the necessity of keeping prices balanc ed evenly for sound economy Our County Board of Directors which is elected at the annual meeting each yearconsists of president lst vicepresident DO NOT DELAY April is the best month to Fertilize your lawn NOW IN STOCK Milorganite Sheep Man ure Bonemeal SoGrcen and Shurigain plant food Do that it will be great benefitto all to have the various county commodity groups name representative to our Board Then when any big pro blem comes up in their particular field they can bring the matter before the Federations Board in an intelligent way Our Junior Farmers also have representative on the County Federations Board one from the North Simcoe Jun iors and one from the South Sim coe Juniors We believe that our Junior Farmers will follow right along and develop into Federation of Agriculture workers as soon as they advance from Junior Farmer activity Space does not permit me to mention all the activities of your County Federation but would like to referto few Last year the Edible Oils Act was amended arid this will affect the whole dairy indUStry as well as 14 of labor We have well over 100 major milk markets in Ontario to representing around 120000 farmers Our Ontario Whole Milk League voted unanimously to turn this entire problem over to the Federation of Agriculture to pre sent to our Provincial Cabinet Further work however is yet to be done in this connection The Federation of Agriculture has spearheaded long struggle for adequate marketing legislation and here again lot has yet to be done The Federation has been in strumental in getting increased cOmpensation for farmers for hy dro installations across farm pro perties has aided in better com pensation Ior cattle afflicted with TB has received assistance on freight rates on feed grain coming from the West Some tariff re ductions on farm machinery have been obtained The Federation has greatly assisted in securing the attention of press and radiOto the social and economic problems af fecting agriculture today At the intemational level we have 28 countries now affiliated YOUR Farm Progress Report Simcoe for our Ontario farmers to start up an other organization It is time for some sound thinking Let us all put our shoulder to one organiza tion and we will continue to be heard and go places The old slo gan of together we stand divided we fall never was more real than today In the last 15 years the Voice of the farmer through the Federation of Agriculture has been listened to more and more every year To those who want to start another farm organization would say Come on out boys and find just what is really being done by the Federation Two groups will only double our cost of organiza tion and cut personal or 13 GRASS SILAGE IN OPERATION OF By KEITH NICRUER Agricultural Representative South Simcoe Dept of Agriculture With spring coming along there are number of inquiries about rotation of crops in order to get the best feed for livestock as well as protection of the soil which pro duces these groups Grass and clovers are probably one of our best crops for conservation pur poses in that they cover the earth all year and thus aid in preventing erosion and also in holding water during periods of excess runoff The grass roots are fine and fib rous holding the top soil together and the clover roots are deep bringing nutrients from deeper in the soil as well as providing nit rogen by means of the nodules on their roots These grasses and clovers can be utilized very economically by our livestOck during the summer months as pasture and it has been only in the last few years that much of program has been devel oped for this cheap feed during the rest of the feeding period It has been used as hay and when there Was good drying weather this was aas good feed as could be obtain ed but in poor drying weather lot of good quality feed was lost or depreciated considerably by weathering The answer there fore in storing this feed is silage Good grass silage is as good as good hay but is much better than poor hay Mixtures Practically all combinations of grasses and clovers are uSed today for silage purposes or they may be uSed singly In tests conducted by the Ontario Agricultural College year ago red clover showed very promising and we have farmers in the county who have used this for three years with excellent results Sweet Clover may be used but should not be too mature when cut or there will be loss due tovmoulds developing in the hollow stems Generally grass mixtures and pas ture clippings make good silage but should not be too mature Cutting and Handling Fourteen years ago Ottawa Dairy Farm filled six silos each 20x40 using the hayloader in the field to get the green hay on the wagon and then took it offat the changed greatly and today prac abarn with forks This methOd has 983 Pro tically all grass is handled with forage harvester except in few cases where long hay is put in trench or horizontal silo with Patterson buck rake When putting grass or clovers in silo it is important that they should not be too mature in order to insure good quality feed Clovers should be cut when they are just starting to come into bloom and in most cases this would mean that the silo is filled by June 5th This not only tends to spread the work better in the summer months but also gives better opportunity to get second érop of hay fromthe same field The water content of grass and clover is of major importance in providing good quality silage Grass which is ensiled when too wet will carry quite strong smell which will be heavy in the stable and stick to your clothes but when the cattle become accustom ed to it will be eaten quite readily and prove to be good feed Grass or silage with about 70 moisture will cure best and will generally Heres tht Means FOR OOHLITYIIHII IIJIVOR lleave more IS IMPORTANT FARM LIFE agreeable type of reed Grass which is too dry is likely to produce mould growth and the entire crop may be lost ilt is therefore better to store your grass too wet than too dry Preservatives After person has become ac customed to working with grass szlage the use of preservative does not seem to be so important but when you are starting first the use of preservative is like an insurance policy Molasses or grain are two of the most common preservatives used but during the past few years there has been considerable work done in this connection and there are other chemicals offered for this purpose Scaling the SM More care must be exercised in sealing the silo with grass silage than with corn because it has to be held during the hot summer months when there is excessive evaporation The top of the silo can therefore be filled with very wet grass and then covered with straw 0rsawdust and tramped daily for about week after fill ing There are also some commer clal type caps being manufactured which seemto cut the losses to minimum Type of Silo We are all acquainted with the upright or tower silo and are most ly satisfied that this is more con venient and satisfactory for feed ing cattle which are housed during thewinter months However when it is necessary to construct new silo number of farmers have quite seriously considered the trench or horizontal silo These may be built more economically and will prove very satisfactory if there is suitable location with good drainage Remember though in our county there is usually good fall of snow and if it be comes necessary to move half silo of snow before you get the ensilagesome morning you will not think too much of your silo In most cases roof is worthwhile horizontal silo can be con structed so that selffeeding can cut down the work and this is one of the big advantages when loose stabling is used or Where young cattle run outside most of the time recent innovation of this selffeeding has been used at the Central Experimental Farm Ottawa in order to prevent freez ing of the silage The rack being covered with sacking tends to keep the silage from freezing and the cattle push the sacking aside in order to feed Use of Grass Silage It can be used as roughage feed for dairy cattle beef cattle sheep and horses and as well we have had reports where it has cut feed consumption of hens and pigs by 5072 It can be used in the ration where corn silage has been used but remember still that few acres of corn might be good insurance crop in hot dry year When changing either to or fxOm grass silage in ration you can expect drop in milk flow but If this is done gradually it will not be significant Plan your farm program ahead and consider grass as an import ant part Of your program because of what it can do in feeding your livestock and conserving our soul for the farmers of tomorrow Simcoe County Can Give Extra Punch To Forum Talks By FLOYD GRESBACH Secretary National Farm Radio Forum Sinkoe County can give an ex tra punch to Farm Forum discus sions By using the community meeting program of the Couniy Federation of Agriculture the Forums in each community are able to put many more ideas into action The Simcoe County educational program is unique in Canada in the way illis organized and financ ed moooperation with the regu lar school authorities yet these who use it are tree to plan the program as they wish In Farm Forum on Monday evening few neighbors discuss their problems after obtaining na tional and local points ofview Then once month at the corn munity meeting the members of several Forums can carry the dis cussion further on practical community basis as well as Ob tain the ideas of someone with special experience on the subject This gives more facts and confi dence to tackle the problems Tlhus Simcoe County has many examples of people solving their own prob lems It is no mere coincidence that Simcoe Csunty was the first in On tario to have County Soil Rc port to employ director of re creation rto employ fulltime trained librarian for the County Library Association to set up County Coopcrative Medical Ser vice and many more services Farm Forum is often com pared to threshing machine The bundles of ideas come from many fields such as the emerience of those in farm organimtions und versities governments and so on Through National Farm Radio Forum these ideas are conveyed to the Forum which threshes them about and then blows the straw and chaff to one side llhe more practical ideas are deposited as the grain As long as the grain or idea re mains by the machine it is of lit SPROULE
