of autumn is her The line of navy ships lyingofi aided by the opening of the shore was an unusual touch The Exhibition earlier storm had whipped up the Ex oi CNE as it is fam Canadian National iliarly calledl have been going to it off party was having rough time and on for the past 40 years Frequently have missed year ing overhead so there was lots or two and occasionally espec ially when we lived in the city have gone down several times in the one season We have ab ways tried to get down to either the Ex or the Winter Fair Last year we thought we would pass up the Ex as we had attended it the previous three years as our son had been home on leave and wanted to make it family outing Last year he had been staying with friends in the city and had gone with them However one day about the middle of the afternoon we had quite heavy storm which stop ped outside work for the day My husband thought that hed take the upperunity to run to the city to see some equ ment he contemplated buying and being so near few hours at the Ex might be squeezed in No sooner thought than done SURPRISE TREAT We also took along young lad who helps us out at odd times during busy spell He had only been to the city on one or two occasions and that quite some time ago and had rover been to the Ex quck trip home to ask permission and change clothes and he was with us quite excited at the unexpected treat He had school ticket but it had been appropriated by an b1 older boy who had already used his own ticket but thought he might get another chance to go and assumed that the real own er wouldnt be using it Along the lake front at the west end of the city the traffic was really unbelievable both ways all lanes jammed bumper to bumper for several miles Not unnaturally we got pushed into the wrong lane and instead or winding up on roadside pork ing place at the west end of the grounds we found ourselves in extricably wedged in lint go ing inside the grounds SNAILS PACE We were only going at snails pace and sometimes stopped for rnniutes at time Our young friend was impressed by the traffic He said he never quite choppy sea and small tender trying put aboard Planes and helicopters were fly to interest anvone who had only to look around It was verging on pm when we reached the gate The guard glanced at the clock then at his wrist watch then with rug that seemed Io say The back with it passed us in on the reduced evening rate We had hoped to be able to park at the west end of the grounds and work our way east ward as far as we had time for and back But we were waved on and on right through to the east end of the grounds then turned and started west on the second parallel road Just at the foot of the Midway car pulled out and we quickly pulled in be fore some pompous official in tervened few steps brought us into the incredible bedain of the Midway in full swmg than which there is nothing noisier WALKED SLOWLY We walked slowly up the cen tre giving our young friend chance to absorb some of this new environment If person accustomed to the noise and bustle of busy city street can nearly have his head blasted off by the Midway atmosphere just imagine what would be the ef fect on person used to the quiet of the country If he was some what stunned or dazed who could ame him We moved on into the com parative peace of the Pure Foods building where our young friend had time to catch his breath mentally as well as phys ically After hot dog and PLUMBING SUPPLIES AT DISCOUNT PRICES You can save by buying your plumbing supplies at discount prices from your cold drink to THE NEW GATE We gazed at the new Dufferin Gate with mixed emotionsquite far cry from the old one we were accustomed to see We spent considerable time in the nearby buildings and were ra ther surprised to discover all three of us interested in the displays of china glass brass pottery and ceramics the diff erent designs shapes and use of color were an endless interest as we picketl out our favorites in each section and discussed the general points of interest connected with the various exhi bits At the Ontario Government building we viewed the animals birdsvand fish We were cspec ially interested in the exhibit of snakesa placard above each cage gave perlinent information about the occupant STAR GAZING One of the highlights of the evening was pause on the Terrace where half dozen or more high lt powered telescopes were set up and you were invit Saturn the nine moons of Jupi ter of which only four are vin ble at any one time the canals of Mars and the mountains of the Moon which we couldnt and by ChalCE they havent they giv you pamphlet winch sati your curiosity You can really see these wonders and it an eerie yet uplifted feeling On our slower return trip down the midway our young friend was given the chance to try some of thc allows and rides On several which he wxslicd to try but was reluctant to alone my husband accompanied him was content to be an innocent bystander We moved lull just before the grandstand exodus and waved on bythc traffic police were soon out of the city stop at highway restaurant for war ming bowl of soup and sandwi ches completed the days ac tivities Of course there was ever so much more that we did not even attempt to see but for first visit of only five hours think we incluned as much of ed to look and see the rings of interest and
