SPORTS TYPE By STEVE JONESCU Spam Editor GOOD AND GAME Few people realized it at the time and possibly just as few realized it afterwards but after the fifth hole Jim Small who won the Club Championship at Barrie Golf and Country Club yesterday almost fainted Jim confesse early in the match that started at am That reporter had hit the nail right on the head when he wrote earlier hot weather may hurt the lighter golfer Jim 24 is long and lean Jack Nixon is big husky fellow It was hot and humid yesterday morning Rain that halted play temporarily and the dark clouds that hung around threatening same kept the temperatur es to the new champs liking If the weather was right as Jim said few days prior to the match he felt he could beat Nixon He said at the time think Ill play my best golf Sunday wont try to outdrive him but instead try and hit the ball down the middle We dont know for sure whether this was Jims best day but we doubt it We dont know whether he changed his strategy regarding the long balls Doubt was raised here early and often as the two rarely hit drives more than few yords difference On sever al occasions the balls were Just few feet apart and sometimes directly in line with the pin Jims forte however was not his ability to stay with Nixon an the drives His chips and putts were excel lent Jack on the other hand wasnt up to his usual close game He hudtrouble on all of the greens He was always close but rarely in Only on one hole No of the third round did Jock show his usual stuff He chipped in from just few yards above the green In contrast Jim was nearly always inside Jacks chips We dont believe he more than twoputted any green Sixvtime winner Nixon was full of praise for his conqueror Hes wonderful player said the equal ly capable Nixon Jack would make no excuses for his own game Everyone knew his close game was off However whos to say Small wouldnt have risen to the occasion if Jack had shown better Although new to the Barrie course this is his first year Jim is not new to golf While in Montreal few years ago he was encouraged to tum professional His handicap was three at the time Because of slight impediment in his speech Jim decided against it Hes been In Barrie two years Last summer he played many district courses not belong ing to any One of the proudest chaps at the course yesterday was Vern Hook Verns reasons he admits are purely selfish Jim is his soninlaw having married lovely Sylvia Verns daughter few years ago Sylvia says Vern was too nervous to watch the match Being nervous is nothing new Mrs Betty Nixon Jacks wife watched the afternoon play and admitted she was shaky On September Barrie hosts the Simcoe County Golf Championship With Small and Nixon along with Art Powell and Ron Chantler likely to
