No Deficit Payments Predicts COOp Mgr By 1155 There will be no deficit pay ments to hog producers is the opinion of James Simpson genl eral manager 0i First 90 into again as indications are em and humane type of killer operative lackcrs of Onions thnt prices will hold on pal will be installed as soon as it He made this statement Nssday with beef cnn be obtained Additions are morning when asked if the price of hogs was likely to stay above the former floor price as it has been doing since the floor was lowered and the deficit plan was inauguratedthe first of the year The average price across Can ada when the floor price was in control was $2261 However the price since has been as high as $28 in Ontario and is now $250 above the average price The crossCanada price would have to go below the average price before producers would be en titlcd to deficit payment Willi wcancrs selling at $14 and up it does not appear that the producers are going out of the pork business In fact ac cording to thercports received at the marketing end it would appear that more than the aver age number of sows are being bred This however will not affect the market price before the first of the year average is struck which will be the basis of the average price SURPLUS DROPS One hundred million pounds of surplus pork was available to be handled in the prices paid for current hogs and as this is gradually disappearing the price is more likely to raise than IOWlt er The differential between the price of pork and other red meats is the basis on which the pork market is controlled That staggering surplus de veloped when the government was buying pork from the plants and placing it in storage to keep the floor price at the level set When this was removed many producers cut back on sow breeding and production which sent the price to $28 but on the surplus was released it the hog business brought this price back to thclgrotulated present level With the surplus fast disappear ing it would appear business is worth getting back of around $26 that the pig COPACO MEMBERS PROFIT Members of the Copaco have special reason for being in They have share in plant which is second to none in Canada and the total value is considerably in excess of the share value of the mem bers Besides dividends are paid to members who produce and ship hogs to the plant They do not need to market their pro duct through the high produce ers marketing system as their plant entitles them to sell their products as finished pork The cost of handling and ship ping which is chargcd to other than members is not required of those who ship or deliver their own hogs to the cooperative plant This is saving which the members can credit to their plant and the fact that sub stantial dividend is annually divided among the producers that ship there is another good reason for the members to sup port their own plant Last year one hog producer in the local area received atdivie dend of about $3000 and this was over and above the regular market price The development of more of these cooperative plants is only matter of time Quebec has several such processing plants and they are handling much of the pork products of that pro vince Mr Simpson feels that if one was located in Eastern Ontario and another ill the west ern part of the province the re sults would stabilize the pork business substantially The Simcoe County plant has truckloads of its products leav ing every night for all parts of the province especially the north country They also ship to New York and to the Jamaica islands so the Copaco product on the careful man5 ogement which has an almost accidentfree record and little employment changeover The equipment is of the most mod continunlly being made and every available hit of space is utilized The equipment is new through out even to modern smoke room operated by gas in which shovelful of hardwood saw dust is placed and the smoking process is done perfectly with out human hands to care for it Members or prospective mem hers who go to make up this colt operative are reaping the bene fits of the wisdom of those who organized the plant in the years when they had to buck opposi tion even from farmers and truckers who bypassed the plant believing they might never receive payment for any hogs they left there Borden Soldier Will Face Trial September 12 CHATHAM CPiThe
