of us went upto Camp Takagami to he lookat the campsite For Bud Vass chairman of the camp committee and myself it was our first look at tbe camp Camp Takagami is located on GoHome Lake less than an hours drive up Highway 103 it is in the midst of typical Mus koka rock and tree formatldn in fact one cannot help but be pleased with the variety of land forms and vegetation of the area Then too it is located in wonderful areafor canoe trip ping because it is in theheart of maze of rivers and lakes which make it possible to travel to the north and east to Baia and beyond and to the south and west over to Georgian Bay This is mixed blessing the wonderful opportunities inherent in these numerous waterways are tempered by the amount of boat traffic which churns up and down the length and breadth of every navigable body of water The campsite is removed from existing roads by about two mil es of water and little less over land It is still in primitive stages boasting only two bulld ings One is small green shack which has been used as stor age area the other is larger building erected mostly through the efforts of our Ys Mens Club which has small kitchen and dining area SHORTCOMINGS Though the site is still in rather rugged condition imagin ation runs wild with the many little projectsvwhieh would make it veritable summer haven for young folk One of the short commgs apparent is thatany sizeabie fiat area would be achieved only witbgreat disfi eulty because of the rocky knolls and hollows which characteriza the area The board cempcominlttee and group of interested Ys Men are if your building investment goes beyond $5625 per 50 cows So estimates Bellman extension specialist with the Ontario Dcpartmcot of Agriculv lurc Hls reasoning beef cowcalf hard can pay for no thing but the most simple and inexpensive buildings Bellman looks at it this way With an average on per cent calf drop per year and not sales Ear year per cow of steers and alters at 500 pounds your net sales for the year will be 22500 pounds 50 500 average price over the last few years has been 25c 11 pound so total gross returns for the 50 cow herd would be $5525 Economists figure beef cows can afford to pay approximately eight per cent of gross annual income towards annunl rent for buildings and equipment says Bellman Looking at it that way the yearly born rent would be or times $5625 equals $450 The annual barn rent in ciudes depreciation mainteni once interest insurance and taxes lhe $5625 figure is the break even point or maximum allowlt able for buildings hastressesi lNGLES Drury This was last pmvinus to his retirement He was so anxious to make start on writ his memories He had so much to tell of his lifes story that he would be busy for some years However an interruption oc curred this spring was lct ting up one morning about live when suddenly fell back on the bed and could not get up he says of the partial stroke that hlthim over month ago He has been in the hospital since this attack but is recoveri lag and now spends over an hour day exercising un er the instructions of trained hysio therapist He is learning walk again and is accomplishing this gradually He tells of taking few steps now and can get up into choir to meet his visitors EXERCISES We found him sitting in chair beside his bed in room 25A of the old section of Royal Victoria Hospital He has set of rlgginsa over the bed whero he does his five miles every morning was partially par alyzed on one side he says but now can move his arm and leg His wonderful memory is as sharp as ever and he is still just waiting for the time he can get clear of the hospital and it isnt necessarily the most economical Any investment for fociiltlcs above the aciual need of the animals is nn economic 1055 even if the total is well below the breokaven point aw that produces $200 calf doesnt need twice as much housing as onc producing $100 calf All it means is that the higher the ro turn per cow the more you can invest in buildings and still break oven in buildings Lwill How much $5625 buy Well iohousc 50cow herd in new pole frame born with enough room for bed ded area and stall storage you would have to spend $3500 This would be for 62 84 foot build ing at contract price of $1 persquarc fool says the exten sion specialist Other things you might but would be Oh hay barn of 125 ton cap acity for $1000 Moon square feet of paved yard for 25¢ square foot or$1Wo Olonce watercrs hydro etc from the remaining $125 Theres no room here for lazysusans silos or augerfed bunks says Bellman Too ex pcnsivel Ho cautions Dont go too for in cutting building costs Re member that food and labor make up 75 per cent of the cost of production buildings and equipment contribute only 10 per
