Onions Main IncOme mnnivjkoncok Examiner Stall Rtporlcr To housewife or oabopper on out is Justanother vegetalr le fed to asalador to put on hamburger for sometimes little thing which inevitably bringstears But to thousands of people con nected with the llollbod Marsh vegetable industrythe main source of wealth for Bradford andtha southern part of the countyonions account for the largest portion of income and the hardest type of work Throughout the growing sea son whloh beginsiin May the crop must be continuously weod ed and sprayed for variety ol reasons It is dusted to keep the weeds down sprayed several times to wordoff maggots and cultivatai time and again to keep the ground loose so that air can circulate around the roots 0f the growers working hours half the time must be spent on his onions On an average farm on the Holland Marsh about 15 acres live acres are seeded with on ions Whatever other lob the grower may be doing at the time his mind is never at rest for he knows his onions are walling This preoccupation with his malorzcrop lasts throughout the summer and comes to head around the Labor Day weekend when pulliogtiroe draws near PULLING EASY Pulling Is relatively easy process with but one man re quired to run the pullers The garden tractor has attached to it two circular counterrotating discs which spin just under tb surface of the ground and heap two rows of onions together One and half days is requir ed to pull five acre field The crop is then left to dry in the sun One week of dry weath er is usually sufï¬cient About week after pulling comes the process of topping Several years ago before com bines came onthe scene toppers run by pulley belts attached to the pulleys of tractors were us ed to drive the machinery These toppers required one man to dump the bushels of untapped onions into the machine1anoth er to push the onions down the grader someone else standing Now the combine the sweat anduthe by the grader throwing out the bad ones and another man putt ing empty bags on and taking full ones off The bags then were sown and piled HARD WEEK With the topper the days work would usually total maximum of 800 bags day and to fann er wilha possible 3000 or 4000 bags day this meant at least week of long hours of sweaty backhr akingwork Wltll the development of work is still there but so is the potential l800hags day Few growers on the marsh have their own combines but those that do are steadilykept busy for at leasta month going from farm to farm doing custom work for their nelghbours NEW DENTIST Allislon has new dentist in tb increasingly difficult is not necessary The cembne is pulled along by the tractor TOUGH OBS One man is located beside the grader sorting out the bad on ions another watches over the bags taking off the full ones and attaching the empties His job ls perhaps the hardest since he has not second to lose while chang ing the bags The onions tumble out in profusion and 50 pound bag can be filled in or all se conds After he takes the bags the loading platform another man must take them off the combine and set them on the ground standing up so that the women following along can sew them up with their large curved needles and strong cord Many timesduring the work the women must run to catch up with the combine and sew the bags as they come off the as sembly The dust from this job hovers over the
