Toronto where we competed in the Toronto and District Business Association contest There were 192 contestants al together Barrie Central being the only participant outside the Toronto area The competition was held this year at Northern secondary school and included shorthand typewriting spelling takes up whole block The and rapid calculation The cone testants from our school were shorthand Pat DAmbrosio and Ann Spooner 120 typewriting Carolyn Boyd 12C spelling Pauline Kunce and Gail Cucu iidt both of SpecialCommer cial The school itself is large and contest was held in the auditor jum and all the typewriters were on the stage There were two rows of tables running the width of the auditorium in front of the stage This was Where the shorthand competition took place The shorthand came first and was dictated at no words per minute After dictation the slu dents were sent into two class rooms to transcribe Then came the typewriting cbntest This was held in two heats because of the large num ber oi contestants Then the students were sent into several Next came the spelling can test This was very interesting because it was given over the loud speaker and answered oral 13 It was similar to an old tashiond spelling bee where students spelled orally and stayed in he contest as long as he or she spelled the word cor rectly Paulinosteyed up until there were just 12 students standing Ithink our two girls did well considering the difficult words to be spelled vAtter the contest closed and while we waited to hear who were the winners relreshments were served by the typewriter companies in the school cafe teria After the rclreshmants Mr Hewitt of Northern secondary school proceeded with the an nouncements He announced the shorthand first VWell ladies and gentle men there seems to be tie in the shorthand The two win ners are Miss Leila Tuovinen from Vaughan Road Collegiate institute Toronto and Miss Pat DAmbrosio from Barrie Dis trietl Central Collegiate Bar an excited cheer greeted Principal Lorne John stons announcement thatthe representatives of Midland Penetang District High School in the string instrument contest had placed first in the Kiwanis Music Festival in Toronto The fact this was MPDHSZB ï¬rst enhy in contest of this kind plus the fact that for the better part at in years now the Royal Conservatory which has many years of experience has been capturing the prize made it all the more reason for our students to play as never before Becauseol the Conservatorys strong hold on the prize MPDHS was the only high school who dared try for it our stxing ensemble played Geminlan by Grossoby which had been well received in MPDHSs auditorium just week prior to the contest Its great success is attributed to perlect attendance at practice sometimes three evenings week and the eminent con ducting of Mr Bartlett who teaches music in Midland look ing for future prospects for lidPs instrumental department Our Kiwanis Shield winners consist
