aooxs so new AGAIN To read agopd book onccyand never again is to také one bite from an apple and throw the rest away so heavy is the flood of new books nowfalling from the presses so strong is the etol keep up with the Joneses in the matter of books as well as that of cars clothes and ranch type bungalows that many at us feel we have not ti to read books over again We might fall behind socially if we were unable to discuss the latest bestseller About three weeks ago iwas seized with desire to reread Thc Cruei Sea Nicholas Mons arrats bestselling novelof five or six years ago found three copies sitting quietly shoulder to shoulder on the shelf blew the dust off one and took it home Now ordinarily bestsellers do not land up to second reading one an interval of years They tend to have the nostalgically comie quality associated with the fashions of the 1920s But there are exceptions and The Cruel Sea isone of them found fit every hit as absorbing the second time as had the first though did not this tim sit up until three mm to finis it The urge to find out what happened was gone and had time to admire the superb craftsmanship which gives structural integrity to this practically plotless story Details of event background and choract eritation missed on first read ing emerged to enrich my ex perience of the book under stood more clearly than the filst time the brittle those brief periods theerew spent ashore and recognized in that circumstance the truth that when people are dedicated willingly or unwillingly to single clearly de fined purpose all time not spent in pursuance of that purpose is empty and irrelevant Alltin all am glad that rcrcad The Cruel Sea although it is possible that may not want to do so again Well pleased with this second reading turned to sterner stuff The Plague by Albert Camus was not and probably will never be bestseller It is at book well worth second third and perhaps even fourth reading It is on the surface the story of city isolated from the world not by flood or earthquake but by more deadly and terrifying en emy within itself The city of Oran is struck by an outbreak ot bubonic plague the Black Death which ravaged Europe in the Middle Ages and isolhted in quarrantinc for period of months Through the eyes of Dr Rieux the author observes with clinical exactness the mounting tension in the town as dead rats accumulate the first hysterical refusal of doc tors and officials alike to recog nizeor accept the nature of the disease and the emotional temv per of the inhabitants as the ep idemic runs its course chiefly it is the story of Dr Rieux and the little group of men who suriJound him Ram bert the reporter whose one de sire is to see again the young wife he left in Paris but who when the chance of escape comes can not tear himself away from the epic struggle in which his friends are engaged Cottard who wel comes the plague because it brings relief from an over ng personal fear Grand the little clerk whose inability to find words for the simplest needs makes his determination to write great novel both ludicrous and tragic And lastly Tarrou whose apparent neutrality is revealed as an almostgodlike compassion for suffering humanity The tone of muted objectivity in which the book is written the cnncentration humdrum and even sordid do serve only to strength pact of the book by dri ng home uncompromisingly the love and admiration of humanity which is its mainspring In the words of Dr Rieux amid the rejoicngs whenthe plague SJLiast oyer itstates quite simply wht we learn in time
