Springdale Blvd Toronto Satur like this is Tims year SPOR By STEVE JONESCIJ srn McNABNEY The good looking young man who greeted us attire door of 301 day had the appearance of an athlete restipg before compeli tion We werent very wrong The twinkles in his eyes that disting uishes him in all of hispictures werent as bright as iheycould have been butlwe could tell at first sight why so many folks have so many nice words for Sid McNabney This was our very first meeting with Sid and its meet ing we will never forget llere was nun fighting much tougher light than most of us ever will with grim determin ntion Sid knows he has cancer He knows that the odds are stack ed against him But he isnt giv ing up His fight to win ovcrthe dreaded disease is not for hlms self During our chat with him we knew that this man fight ing for his family pre ty wife Fran and husky fouryearold son Bruce All during our stay in which we were made extremely com fortable Sid did not once even hint that he wanted sympathy in order to hear of his condition we had to ask And it was through one of our questionsthat we were rallied to hear that his condition had shown definite signs of progress Since November Sid had taken treatments on hlsweakest lung Xray reports few days before our arrival were described as very good Sids eyes brightened considerably when his rosycheeked son waddlcd in the house full of snow Then he turned his head little and said thank God hes healthy Bruce slimmed down to his in door clothes and plunked himse1f down beside his father forever looking admiringly up at him The little fellow probably doesnt rea ize the fight his daddy is experiencing And his daddy probably wont show any visible signs of weakness while the boys around either The MeNabneys arcfighting an uphill battle and the spirit in which they are tackling it is heartwarming Regardless of how hard Sid or Fran fight back they cannot do it alone We can help by either sending along donation or attending the Benefit Hockey Game and Dance next Monday Money is needed to continue the treatments that could put Sid back on his feet where we all want him The Montreal Canadiens very kindly sent $100 donation Satur ay coma ONNN reaper it could well he that Ted Teeder Kennedy has already helped the Toronto Maple Leafs if so then he deserves to be on the Leafs payroll whether or not he plays in regular game Saturday evening in Toronto the Leafs who forthe past two weeks or so looked like they were doing their best to get to the bottom of the NHL heap put on what was undoubtedly their greatest show of power and finesse this season The highlytouted Red Wings were the victims of the Toronto=inechanism While displaying very strong snappy offensive the Toronton rans also were brilliant on defence The hackcheckingof rhe forwards was also treat to bossmon Conny Smythe who grinned most of the evening An example how well the Leafschecked can be illustrated rnthc fact that neither Ted Lindsay orGordquwe were able to get one clear shot on goalie Ed Chadwick in fact Lindsaysgame was so inattentive that he sat out the last period What all this has to do withKenriedy is elementary When and if the Leafs see fit to put Kennedy hack into harnessthey will also have to see fit to ship someone to either Rochester of the American League or Winnipeg of the Western League There isnt single player on llrcLcafs or any other NHL club who enjoys the long train ride That was undoubtedly the rcasonwhy the centres performed especially well SaturdayTod Sloan whos not going to learn any bonuses for hislgoal scoring feats this season was terrific as hack checker Brian Cullen for whom the Leafs paid pretty price car ried the puck very well In his brief appearances andexcluding two very cheap penalties Billy Harris handled his pivot position quité capably Rudy Migay was as steadyas usual He looks the only one of the four centres to have protective screen around his job TlitlS YEAR Every trip we make to the Gardens we purchase program in every program the same story harnesses most of our attention it is the one entitled Is This Tims Year Well just so we wont let any questronsgo by unanswered well answer Yes it sure looks Tim of course Tirn Horton the Northern Ontario youngster who was such hrtm minor hockey that the Leafs were sure they had another Eddie ShoreWhen Tim moved up to thePittsburgh Hor netsnow defunct of the American League the prediction was still good But like so many otherswhen they first entered the big tent he was bust When he finally did get rolling hebroke leg For part of two seasons Horton had trouble with the leg Last year he was definitely not theEddie Shore of the 50sHe was just another de fenccman vWell on three of our trips to the Gardens the Toronto Maple Leafs were in action And on every occasion Tim seemed the top man on the me He was awarded stareach evening and if stars were given for the amount of work done not goals scored Horton would have dragged down the first star each of these evenings None of the nther defencemen that we have seen this you looked quite as good The Gardens wouldnt be going too far out ontheproyerbial limb if they changedthe story to it Looks Like Tims Year caarsrmasfisrsciiu THIS IS HOW WE DID IT up in Barrie Thats what Sid MoNabney seems to be telling his fouryearold son Bruce Mrs
