PA EngCAr CAMP BIORDEN Forty TWO Memorable orden By W02 TATE This year 1959 is memor able year for Canada This is the 50th anniversary of Powered Flight 42 years of Military Flye ing and Training at Camp Bor den and the 35th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force Camp Borden is known as the birthplace of the RCAF and in deed it is so This venerable stotion has many firsts to its credit Some of these are first mili tary flying 1917 oyal Flying Corps Canada itial provis ioual pilot officers course for the newly formed Canadian Air Force 1923 the firstautomatic ally controlled propeller was tested at Camp Bordon Camp Burden has nearly 31 ways been one of the largest technical training institutes in Canada both civil and military During the year 1916 the Bri his military experts realized that they would need place to train pilots where the weather was suitable or flying all the year around and the surrounding area was clear Camp Borden with other sites at Toronto lilolt hawk Desoronto and Leaside was chosen By April 1917 Canadian built Curtiss JN4 Canucks were fly ing at Camp Borden The Jen ny as it was fondly known was built by Canadian Aero vplanes Limited Toronto 19 The Canadian Jenny had many refinements over its American deslmied Curtiss JNd It had control stick instead of Wheelf ailerons on the top and bottom wings improved metal trailing edges on the wings and fabric covered metal rudder and elev ators The Irish linen covering the aeroplane was changed to Wabasso cotton made at Thre Rivers Quebec It is said at that time that the Canadian woven cotton was equal in strength to the best Irish linen then available The Jenny was not particular ly liked by the Royal Air Force as the American built Jennies had bad habit of shedding the fabric from the top wing during loop There is no indication that this ever happened to Canadian built JNAC UNGAINLY BIPLANE Whatwas the aeroplane like It was an ungainly looking bi plane with 90 horsepower Curtiss OX5 eight cylinder va engine The propeller turned at 1400 revolutions per minute and the aircraIt flew at the breathtaking speed of all miles per hour By the end of World War One 2950 Jennies had been built by Years At Ca Camp Borden was instruan tnl in the training of 1884 pil ots from April 1917 to November 1918 Out of this group 72 pll ots were for the USA At the end of World War One Camp Borden could accommo date 12 officers 1500 cadets and 1020 NCOs and airmen On Dec 19 1918 the six Squad was at Camp Borden were do mobilized and Camp Borden temporarily ceased to function as an Air Training Base ESTABLISH AIR FORCE In the year 1920 the Canadian Air Force was established and Camp Borden became its School of Aviation Some of the airth types flown at Camp Borden during the 1920s were the Avro 504K Did9A the NineAck Bristol Bristit Avro WAN DcHaviIlalld 60 series Moth Comp Borden at no time from 1920 to 1939 was abandoned for Canadian military flying but many of its activities tailed The year 1931 saw the Siskin Aerobatic team from Camp Bor den go on the fabulous Trans Canada air tour The pilots were McNab Gobcll Hawtrey This aerobatic display was poriormed by one of theoutstanding aero hatic teams ever formed on this continent By 1939 Camp Borden again became prominent as an Air Training centre as well as an Army centre The British Com monwealth Air Training Plan came into effect and No1 Ser vice Flying School was formed at Borden From 193 to 1945 Camp Bor deg trained 1790 pilots for the AF 558 for the Royal Aus tralian Air Force18 for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and362 for the Royal Air Force Thus grand total of 2728 peo ple were trained as pilots during World War II This is an ach ievement that Borden can be justly proudof From 1945 to 1959 Camp Bore den has been known for its Technical Training which is seg ond to none on this continent The courses given at Camp Bor den are Aircraft engine Aii= frame mechanic Armament Systems Ground Control Ap proach Systems Instrument
