North Simcoe PaStfire Improvement Competition GOOD DAIEX PRODUCTION NEEDS MODERN PROCESSINS Cats And Barley Variety Cooperative Row Test New varieties of oats and bur ley are being introduced from year to year as they are devel oped at our Research and Ex periment Stations across Canada and it is important that these new varieties be given careful testing to varying soil and clim atic conditions across the Prov ICE In 1958 we carried through two types of tests Rod Row Tests of Oat and Barley Varieties in cooperation with the Field Hus bandry Dspartment 0AC and Field Stjip Tests of Barley Vor ieties under local sponsorship The results of these tests along with Provincial Zone averages are presented for your guidance These tests were carried through this year by Allan Mc Nahb of Minesing and at the Drillia District Collegiate plots under the direction of Munsell Chapman in charge of the Agri cultural Department at the Col legiate Owing to some difficulty experienced by the students in applying fertilizer when seeding the 01101 plots too much stress should not be placed on my to vuim Garry Rodney Fundy 102 Glen 102 Vicar hulless 104 Shield 93 Clintland 93 102 104 904 869 age but Rodney is preferred by many on account of its excellent feeding quality Fundy and Glen are two newer varieties that are quite promising The Vicnr hull less oat may have special value for anyone who wants to have hulless oats for young pigs The Vicar yields quitclwcll but is difficult to store without heat ing Farmers who want an early oat forlate ground or who want to harvest part of their grain earlier to spread the harvest or give the clovers better chance Report On Weed Control on By cfin mums North Simcoe Weed Inspector ergé spraying of corn with Simazin in 1957 created wide interest in this method of weed control throughout the County so no difficulty was experienced in arranging for ceoperators to have 1acre demonstrations in six at the ships in North plots days of Nonhjimm in 1959 was recommended by the hecutive Directors of the NSSClA and rap pruvédunanimousiy by the An nual Meeting at Elmvale Decem her 5th 1958 Those recommending the Pas tureCornpetition were of tho opinion that no elfort at the present time offers so great an opportunity for improvement in productionor in reducing the costs at ptoduction as does the improvementcd our pastures As this Report boars out we have learned lot about pasture im provenncnt through our tests and trials of the past six or eight years infertility buildup lirn tog drainage improved mixtur es new varictles of aasses and clovers and better management practices Attention to all these factors has paid off well in ac cordance with the needsof the particular fields under study and it seems time we started apply log our knowledge of pasture im provemcnt to the pasture im provement programme of the farm as Whole To meet pres ent day conditions we need vol ume of production ouallty of pro duction and economy of produc tion This Report contains many leads in this direction and the os sistance of your As oclation and the Department of griculture is available to help meet such problems as may arise from farm to farm complete form pasture im provement programme cannot of course be completed in one year or even two and we hope therewill be sufficient interest to carry on the Pasture Compe tition for at least five years The important factor is to make start where you can this year and each year you can add to the valueof your posture program me winners in the North Simcoe Posture Competition each year are
