time activities complete balanced program that fills the needs of young farmers fleld of grain The lunda Hog Production Is BigCounty Industry By One of the biggest farm indus tries in this port of Ontario is hog production We do not pro duce the most hogs of any of the counties but what we do produce are among the best The marketing of the product is now matter handled entirely by the producers themselves through their bog marketing co operative Let us take look at this sys tem which has been through the washer so often that it could hardly be anything but clean The actwss subject to vote last fall and already there are those who would upset the work ing of this system of selling claiming the vote was not fairly bandied At present the price of bogs is set by the floor value and no purchaser may buy for less It is the usual bidding price but there are occasions when some prir cessing plant has need for more than the usual requirements and they will raise the bid few fractions This is sign for another plant whose buyer may have figured that there would be plenty at the $2500 figure and was sitting back to get his supply He may find there will floor at his plant unless supply of hogs is available soon The Barrie yards can havc truckload of bags at most of the Toronto plants in less than two hours after they receive an order Charles Newton the manager of this yard may have truck come in with part load of hogs The teletape has not shown signs of buyer and it may be nec essary to unload them He types out message on the machine and it ticks off in the Toronto office fifty more or less hogs are available The trucker wants to get load to Torontofas he also has extent that they may produce them At the present time an uddilt tlonel refrigeration system Is being installed so that the chil ling oi the carcasses may he handled more rapidly Addi tlons to the killing floor and the painless method of killing is soon to be undertaken The Barrie plant is one of the most efficient Their products are in demand wherever they are sold and their 2500 mm hers are their best salesmen Simcoe County is fortunate to have these Cooperatives oper ating here The system seems to be the most satisfactory that could be devised The cost of be belowdown on the killing some beef cattle on part of the truck Back comes the order ship to certain packer needed for the morning kill The trucker is supplied with manifest which will allowvlhe hogs to be unloaded at theTo ronto plant Without this mani fest there can be no delivery The trucker is on his way Following his is another truck wiih part load or full load and already there is an order to fill it at one of the large processing plants that will take his load and some of those that had been unloaded previously These are all put on the truck making full load and away they go The packers in Toronto pay 70c per hog for delivery on the hogs from the Barrie plant to Toronto They may have come from Haliburtoo or farther and that part of the haulv was at the expense of the farmer producer From Barrie to whcra ever they go the cost of the ship ment is paid by the buyers MEMBERS PEN There is one pen at the Barrie jyard known as the Copaco pen This is for bags of members of the First CoOperative Packers who have sent their bogs along with trucker who was on his way to Toronto These hogs are weighed in and are passed along to the Copaco as they require them If these and the others which have been deb ered to the plant direct by mem bars or their hired truclu are insufficient to keepthe Barrie plant operating then the man ager will have to bid on the market as do the plants in otherparts of thoprovinec The Cooperative plant at Barrie is the only one which is allowed to take pigsdlrect from the producers They must he members of the CoOperative and blive signed the agreement which provides that these me bers are processors of their own products and desire todorso through their own plant and market flieyfinlsbcd product IIIE BARRIE STRouD ROBINSON IBRADrogD ppgr BRADFO CuMMiu handling the hose is set at nominal figure but if this is found to be creating surplus then it will be reduced even if the selling costajhould go in the red ion is time The amount Much producers now pay covering the cost of the settlement cheque is loss than it was under the former manner of individual shipments to the open market There may be occasional dis satisfaction at the hog produclt ers yards mostly because some trucker bad to unload bugs for which there was no market and proceed to the To ronto market with apartload of beef Fllll T0 Course Breeders 24 June 15 1415 May Visit of Motion Teach ers College 49 Conference of the Federated Womens insti tutes of Ontario Toronto Teachers College
