To the Editor The Barrie Examiner Your editorial 1950 Plowing Match in the Nov issue of your paper and the reports from the Branlford Expositor on Uicvsame page do not give very encourag ins forecast for the International Plowing Match which is to be held in Simcoe County in 1950 The first two reports of the Brantlord Expositor give very fair picture of what might happen at plowing match but the report Of the city sticker is too ridiculous and nonsensical for much consider ation In your report it would seem that you had given too much credence to this last Expositor re port In the first place thousands of farmers wont stay away from the 1950 match for the reason that the arrangements for the BrantCount match were inadequate This Years president of the Inter national said We did not imagine it would be such success The work that was done by the local committee deserves the highest praisc You accept the report that 75000 persons attendd the match on Thursday Oct 14 They would arrive there from ani until pmfive hours that would be 15000 per hour or about 250 per minute It is not surprising that there should be traffic jam but it did not extend for 20 miles or half that distance Our party arv rived within sight Of the match perhaps two miles distant without being in jam although that last two miles did take mole than an hour but on that particular day each year there is always traffic jam On Friday with reported 40000 in attendance there was no traffic jam One Expositor re porter stated Good temper reign ed over the 1600 acres This statement can also be applied to the slow traffic If ticket sellers were stationed on the roads fur ther out from the match it would speed up the passing of the cars As to the htatement that there were only hot dogs and hamburg ersavailable to feed the people that is incorrect for there were many large tents where full course meals were provided satisfactory to plowman and at reasonable prices Of course there were stands where you could get hot dog or hamburger if you pre ferred With reference to next years match being in remote section of the countyin Tecumseth Twp south of Alliston that is also very misleading statement The hector50 the International mens Association who chose the site for the match state that the location is quite satisfactory It was acquired during the recent war by the Department of Defence for Canada as landing field in connection with Camp Holden and the present owner MruWarwiek has very generouslyb offered it for the match It has an area of 500 or 600 acres without fence There are good township roads leading to it from the north south east and west besides there is county road running along one side of it As to there not being sufficient homes to accommodate overnight visitorsin reasonable proximity to the match the one Complaint heard from the billeting commit ice at the match headquarters was that there were not enough en quiries for overnight accommoda tion Our party of five were bil match and am satisfied that not thousands or even huhl dreds but perhaps 10 farmersi might stay away due to the in convenience of traffic jam in getting into the match grounds Persons going to colleges on Sat urday afternoons during the sum mer have made the statement that it took longer to go from the south ern limits Of the Town of Barricl to the Five Points than it required to drive from wish to attention to an incident that oc curred in front of the Roxy Theatre on Saturday Nov at approximately 815 pm While standing there an officer of the Barrie detachment of the Ontario provincial police came along on duty which apparently consisted of checking the parking meters and issuing tickets to those who had overparked My attention was drawn to two cars which were parked on the north side of Elizabeth St between the corner of Maple Ave and the front of the Roxy Theatre One of these cars was twotone grey limousine which Ibelieve is own ed by retired Barrie business man The other car was an older model Ford which believe is raw your bad oVerpii the meters bothshowed violation This officer stopped at the big car and noticed that it was over parkedulfe then proceeded to the cashier at the Roxy Theatre and obtained some change to putinto the meter whichhe did and ex tended thepprking time for this vehicle After doing this he pro ceeded to the second car the Ford which had also overparked and without momentshesitation he gave this party parkingtlcket The motorist whoreceived the parkfhgticket had violated the law and deserved his fine but do not believe that an officer of the law should Show discrimina trust that this matter will come to the attention of the traffic com mittee in order thanyanzincident such as this willnot occur again INTERESTED Yet the remuneration editorial page has been completely altered in layout In planning new design for the editorial page we scanned scores of daily and weekly newspapers We found many splendid pages but in practically every instance we found that the editorials were on the left hand side of the page There Were few newspapers with editorial columns in the centre of the page and there were other variations of de sign However we did not see one newspaper with the editorials on the right hand Side of the page This is not to say that there are no such papers but we have not noticed this style in any of the nearly 100 newspapers we receive here each week Our readers will also note another change in this weeks issue The editorial page has ibeen transferred from page two of the first Soviet Foreign Policy That Of The For some time Moscow cherished hopes of revoltby the workers of the West When this did not materialize but European tension mounted sharply instead Soviet Russia had to abandon her seclusioneand take more active part in international affairs This process was hastened by the change of regime in Germany from the Weimar Republic to the Third Reich Russiarr reactionssfo thrrisevof Hitlerare important be if cir cumstances are strong enodgh After the revolution Moscow casti gated all capitalist countries as imperialists Fear of Germany and Japan however drove the Kremlin to draw hurried distinc tion the West inembarrassing confusion Some of thehfhad laehaeenmigh to assume that after theirlong campaign to stop aggressors they wouldbe applauded for supporting War against them But Moscow announced that wafwas not anti Fascist but imperialistic and therel fore tobe opposed All this of course was conveniently forgotten when Germany invaded Russia and section to the front page of the second sec tion This change has been made to facilitate work in our composing room Our sabbath ers are probably notlnterested in the tech nical details of publishing newspaper but we eculd explain to any who are interested why this change will assist our composing room staff The idea of publishing editorials on front page is not new The Saturday Nightcarrled this plan out with great suc cess for many years In fact Saturday Night did not change this idea until the recent jump from newspaper to magazine Sat urday Night liked the idea so much that al though the editorials are now inside the mag azine the page is still referred to as The Front Page Other changes will be made in The Bar rle Examiner from time to time as we ex tend our efforts to provide better newspap er for our 30000 readers Government At Home When person hears the word govern ment he Often casts his thoughts to Toronto or Ottawa But there is form Of government that is much closer to each of us In Barrie and Innisfil and Oro and Vespra and other nearby municipalities we have form of government that is right at home with us the year round Measured in terms of dollars and cents the municipalities in this vicinity spend more than million dol lars everyyear Local governments are becoming big busi ness Town and township councillors now handle money in tens of thousands of dollars School trustees plan in terms of hundred thousanddollar buildings and other elected representatives deal in substantial sums And this business is handled by scores of our neighbors There are many town and town ship councillors scores of school trustees and there are public utilities commissioners and others who are elected annually The time is now approaching for municipal elections To keep these local governments strong it is necessary for the taxpayers to express their views To give the citizens an opportunity of expressing their ideas on var ious issues it is imperative that elections be held Each year there are few persons elect ed in some municipalities who never served before It is to these new candidates we look for new life and interest These persons who are willing to come forward and let their names go before the people are the ones on whom we depend for the strength of our local governments In the lnterests of the municipalities in this area we are hoping to see several new candidates this year Rents Going Up Folks who own their own homes must be enjoying themselves at the expense of those who rent During the past several days there has been new type of game in which people everywhere have been attempting to figure out what the new rental increases will mean Sometimes the reports emanating from Ot tawa indicate that the increases may be 25 percent Other reports tend to Show that the rent increases will be only fraction of this amount ramwn pawmi Many people who own their own homes are almost as interested in the new rental regu lations as their neighbors who are not own ers Some who own are entertaining them selves by trying to estimate how much they will save by not having to pay increased rent Of course those who are most vitally concerned are the families who are paying rent In Barrie the pr0portion of home owners is comparatively high The proportion of owners is even higher in the surrounding municipalities becauserural people have greater interest in owningsland than persons who are not so vitally concerned about where they live But nevertheless the effect of the rental increases will affect the entire esonomy of this and every other part of Can ada Fora few weeks there were indications that the cost of living might come down be cause retail stores were able to Show some decreases However the recent Increase in the price of fuels and the newer increases in rents will give the cost of living further boost in Canada At the close of the war there was gen eral impression that prices might go up for short time but it was expected there Would soon be go decrease This decrease was particularly cted in the building business of houses that hagpcenbulit formerly years But in mostcentredbulld lng costs have not come down to any appreci able extent and the price of old houses has remained comparatively high There are those who believe it is good thing that prices are holding up because this indicates continuing prosperity Many of the persons who are being obliged to pay the increased rents and other prices have feeling that too much prosperity may be too much of good thing But someore finding minor consolation in the littleiokes that are made of those who are given credit for some of the conditions One writer point ed out that Hon Mr Abbott had sigheda lease on his own apartment home before announcing the rental increases and anctli erwriter drew attention to the fact thatthe Government had decided to provide free house for Rt Hon Louis stLLaurent before the rental changes were announced SChool Essay Competition The school childrens Participation in such contest cannot but increase desire to beautify the scene of their operations and imprOVe the surround ings Apparently the girls got most benefit from their experience Judgingfrom
