Arena is liootl Business for Barrie and You It should not cost the taxpayers tl iiirric anything in cstia taxcs to enlarge the arch1 lhc anoint cominzssron have good reason to bclicic that with the greatly increased rcvcnuc they can expect they can sctiisicc more than cnougli every year to meet the debenture charges and cvcn tually to REDUCE THE TAX RATE The cost or tiic arciiii enlargement iiiis DLCtl tcnocred and set at $131500 This is the amount no more that the iatcphycrs of Barrie arc LlSlitd to guarantee llic dcbcii tiircs wili be issued for 20 years and the yearly payments will be $883886 to retire the ltbtlltlilts Dont forget that opcrating expenses will increase negligibly but rcvciiuc Will be greatly increased Looking over tlic stcady growth or Barrie and District for the past 15 years tlic trcmcndous potentialities for this District in tlic fuiuic thc commission feels that there is very littlc gamblc Thin must however huic the support of tlic ratepayers of Barrie to back them and the future of our Town cnl Arena is llnpclcssly Ininlcquailc In Acconnnotlnlinn llarric Arciia ut present with only 1100 scats is how lcssly iiiadcquatc for accommodation That is fact that cvcryonc will admit This Town has grown to ovcr 12000 pcoplc and the District to well over 50000 Barrio is the cciitrc and natural shopping focal point for that District Not only is the seating in the Arena far bclow necessity but the accommodations are also Ill llic aislcs are always crowded it is cxtrcmcly difficult to get in or out of the arena lunch counters and rest rooms arc cramped there is lack of dressing room space Looking to the present and the future the arena com mission have had plans prepared which if piitinto cffcct will increase the seating to 4000 Those seats will be roomy and comfortable providing clear view wide uislcs easy access into the Arena trom sidc entrances modcrn lighting system more rcst rooms storage for equipment etc And also new roof The old roof must be replaced this your anyway This ciiii be done at the same time the alterations are made and the cost is included in the estimates If the arena proposal is turned down the roof will have to bc rccovercd anyway Show Fuilhin tho Fulnrc ol lhirric You may be interested to know that the series of ads running in The Examiner did not cost the Arena Commission anything They have been paid for by the group of Barrie citizens listed below There are many more in town in favor of the Arena enlargement but only those listed were called on and there was iiotcntmglitimc or need to go farther as the small group of canvassers got only two turn downs In Barrie wchave been fortunate iiigctting into the iastcst junior hockey league in Canada In the last two Seasons Barrie Fryers have won the OHA championship the Eastern Canada once and were Canadian finalists once This team has advertised Barrie from coast to coast It will be impossible to keep our position in hockey unless the arena is large enough to handle the crowds wishing to at tend For three years now not only have the Flyers been unable to accommodate all the home town fans but they have turned down thousands from out of town for many miles around wishing to get seats for league games Barrie has reached high place in the music world At the recent international music festival in the arena there was sellout long before the event Many town people Were unable to get tickets and no one knows how many from out of town did not come because they couldnt get tickets The arena management have been unable to book out standing attractions because they have the smallest seating capacity in the artificial ice circuit Barrie is in an associai Tmiwith other arenas in the province seating up to5000 It is impossible for the arena commission to satisfy the demand for seats under the present conditions Those who have had either seats or standingroom are not re cciving fair treatment due to overcrowding iltEMEMBERAWCOMPLAINT AGAINSILOUR TOWN OWNED ARENA rs BAD BUSINESS FOR BARRIE Many people will not seem to directly benefitby the arena but taking the final result iiito account each citizen in Barrieshould benefit Particularly the property owner whose financial interests are closely tied to those of Bus iness Business would be better for our mrchants stores will bring higher rents more money circulatesin our
