The newly organized Associated High School Boards of Ontario is co-operat- ing with the Department of Education in working out some scheme that will make education more practical for boys and girls of the public schools and the junior grades of our high schools. This is the formative period in the lives of students, a time when they should be given every assist- ance in choosing their life work. Whether a new type of schools` It is becoming more apparent every ` should be started or a change in the present equipment is a matter to consider. Premier Henry rather favors the setting up of a new type of school, somewhere between the elementary and secondary schools to bridge the existing gap. This school would be a sort of laboratory in which the mentality and taste of boys and girls would be tested out and their future career shaped, with a minimum of loss of time and effort to the pupils and to the community. The plan would involve a sorting out system, and pupils would be encour- aged along the lines they are best adapted for. The initial cost of buildings, equipment and teachers would be heavy and the people are` not prepared for heavy exlpenditurers at present. There should be some ineans, however, of meeting the sit- uation for some years by using ex- isting schools and teachers. There could be more elasticity in adjusting classes and buildings, by giving vo- ` cational guidance and using present 1 facilities to the fullest extent. l3ar- i rie Collegiate has some 600 students in attendance, and perhaps less than !a hundred of these will ever enter the `university or go in for any of the professions. T-he other five hundred should in all fairness get some guid- ance in at least some of the other vocations. _ | PUT UNEMPLOYED MEN , ON CROWN LANDS _`*` I] Settling of unemployed men of 1 [proper capabilities on suitable areas 1 of Crown lands in various pants oi ; the province, and starting them off < with cash grants from direct relief ` funds, probably will be embraced by `early agreements between the Dom- inion and provincial autllorities, im- plementing the Federal direct relief bill passed last week.
