It is now generall_v recognized that a tnistalce was made in locating the highwa_\' between Barrie and Orillia. The road itself is a splendid piece of worlc, and links the two towns by less than one hottr via motor. But the road does not pass through a single \'i11a_ge of any size enroute. and between the Peuetang road and Haiwltestone corners does not front on halt` a dozen farms, as the farin- ers live on the concession lines run- ning north and south. The road as built is not the sltortest distance be- tween Barrie and Orillia, anti is a compromise road. It is well known that Premier Drury favored and en- :lea\'ored to have built a route l'ol- lowing the I e.netan_s: road north through Crown Hill to Dalston, and east to Orillia through Etlgar and Rll_Lj`l)_\`, or favored the ltigltway lea.\ in_; the corners north of Crown Hill, east to the 4th concession, north one-halt` mile and east through Mitchell Square to East Oro to the Hi5.:hwa_\' as now bttilt. Either of these routes would have passed Premier Drury s farm, and in a let- ter to a prominent resident of Oro Premier Drury claimed that by building eight miles north on the Penetang Road before deviating for Orillia the Higltway would serve the] double purpose, i.e., serve Penetang and Midland as well as Orillia and Mttslcolia. '!\(\ `r\rv:I-In` nurl ~kA..An,.t Motorists who use tl1e Provincial Higlnfay be;.\\`een Barrie and Orillia pronounce it one of the best in the Province for travelling on. With the increase in the number of motor cars and trucks more roads of thzs type are needed. The folly of building unenduring roads is con- stantly being lamented by the tax- payer upon whom the burden of maintenance falls heavily. Roads properly built are a saving. The cost of construction may be greater, but the upkeep is certainly less. The Barrie-Orillia liigltway is a well constructed roadway, b11t there were two regrettable mistakes made. Un- necessary expense in the building was made by adding to its width. The cost of widening was enormous. The purchasing of the additional land, reinoval and rebuilding of fences, clearing the land, etc., all took a lot of money. These items were merely incidentals prelintinary to the actual construction oi` the actual road bed. Then the most astonishing point is that the road is not properly located, nor is there any valid reason for its being where it is rather than where it should be. S.-\1'S B.-\l{lKlE-Ol{lLI.l.-\ \\'.\Y' 15 \Vl`u0.\'(z'LY Commenting on this feature, the Orillia News-LetLe1' says: J1 lI-`.l\U|\'(l.. The logical and shortest route from Barrie to Orillia is the old Ridge Road which follows the lake shore from Barrie, passing through the old settled and thriving villages of Shanty Bay, Oro Station and Hawkestone. That I-Iawkestone is an important village is obvious now that the residents of Oro are trying to obtain a continuation school there, and Hawkestone is the larg- est trading centre in Oro toxvnship. Oro Station has long been an im- portant shipping point for live stock and grain. The whole lake shore front Barrie to Hawkestone is li11ed with summer cottages and more are being built each year. The strong protests of leading merchants and oldtime residents along the lake shore prevented the Government from following either the Rllg`il)_T or Mitchell Square northern routes, and the Highway was diverted at East Oro, two miles north, but turn- ed west a quarter of a mile north of Hawliestone, and passing through Guthrie joins the Penetang road the rst corner south of Premier Dt_'ur_v's farm. The road as at present built does not serve the lake t'r0nt from Hawkestone to Barrie, and tourists pas.sin_ through ima;;:ine- they are travel1ln_:: through a sparsely settled cou'ntr,v like Muslcoka, instead of one of the oldest and richest farm- ing communities in Canada. It the Hi:.;hwa_\' had been con- tinued south another quarter of a mile, it would have entered the vil- large of Hawltestone, and running west on the old Ridze Road would have passed throu_':h Oro Station, Shanty Bay, and would have served and opened up the whole lake front to tourists and summer cottagers. These villazes pay a good portion of the township and county taxes, and it was a mistake to sidetrack thetn. A... .. _.--..1. 4 _.,,,,.,,, - .. .,... .. . .-.w-.- I.v .2-ux.-.ncu.u tucun. As a result of cottnter agitations. the route was finally C0m`pI`0Il1lSed and placed in the middle, where it serves the least people and pleases nobody. The northern route through Rtt5.;b_v and Edgar would have opened :1 latiqe fartttittg terri- tory to Orillia and diverted sotne fartner trade that now goes to Bar- rie. If this route had been follow- ed it is 1)os:~:ib1e that the Govern- ment at some future date would have built another higltway along the old Ritl5:e Road connecting Bar- rie ztnrl Orllllzt by :1 shorter route, and servitr: Sltattty Bay, Oro Sta- tion and H11\\'kl9SIOl1e. Ninety-nine per cent. of the tourists would take this Blue Wztter Route in preference to any northern inland route. As 21. result of coutintted atritation and reco_;nizin_: that an injustice had been done the residents of Hawke- stoe and the entire lake front. the County Council have ttow taken over the Ridze Road as a county high- \\'n_\' and itntnerliate steps are to be taken to have the road widened and itnproved. \lntnI-icfc uvhn n:-h-n n V|`r\nrcn-`L lll|[I|ll\|:'lI. .\lotm'i. who a pleasant (11`i\'C' whom they are not in a hlll`X`_\' will do well to turn south from the I-Ti:l1wa_\' on the `l-ith concession (the first road past the hi: hill Lwo and it `half miles east of East Oro) :0 one mile south towards the lake, and at the first t`i;.:ht turn follow the old Ridge Road into Hztwkestone village. and on following the blue water all the way through Oro Sta- tion.
