The board asks companies `to le with it in writing, at as early a date as possible, such observation as they gmay wish to make regarding the proposal of the board to issue an order as suggested herein. ject to its jurisdiction to use an elec-A Richard Newton, C.P.R. brakeman, charged with criminal negligence in causing the death of Engineer `Char- les Armstrong, at Guelph Junction on March 11th, was found guilty at the Halton spring Assizes last week, and sentenced to nine months impri- sonment without hard labor by Mr. Justice Anglin. The fatal accident occurred while the-prisoner was en- gaged in making up a freight train at the Junction yard about four o clock in the morning. In order to do some shunting he opened the switch on the main line, and a spe- cial returning from Toronto to Lon- don with a Masonic excursion ran on to the Goderich line. `The en- gineer, Armstrong, put on the emer- .gency brake, but before bringing the train to a standstill struck a freight on another track which was not quite -clear. Armstrong was killed. /\ One of the most thrilling incidents in the history of railways centres in 1 a runaway engine on the Stockton 1 and Darlington line. Theengine was observed by the driver of another.` and more powerful one. Seeing the fugitive speeding in the direction of i Darlington, he uncoupled his own!" engine, crossed the points and set`, ` , out in pursuit on the same line. It was a long chase, but the pursuer,,, driven at top speed, gradually over- hauled the runaway. At last it came near enough for the driver to crawl to the front of his engine and drop a stout chain over the tender hook of the other. He returned to his foot` plate, shut off steam and screwed down his brake. This steadied the one in front and so retarded its pace that the driver. was able now to creep from his own engine on to the runaway, put on the brake, and bring it to a standstill, almost at the crowded Darlington Station.
