A Board of Education. . The session of the Board. of Edn- cation on -Monday, evening was short. All the members were present but Trustee G. G. Smith. ` . Mr. w. Riddell is visiting in Tot- tenham this week. - - Secretafy Marr read the cof're- ;spond.ence, which did .not disclose [anythmg of importance. . The Prooerty and Supply Commit- tee recommended the purchase of seats for the junior-second room in West Ward.School, at a. cost of $207.50, slate blackboards for Central Schoo1,(at a cost of $116, slate black- boards "for the B.C.I., at a cost of $71, and seats for the B.C.I., at a cost of $220. The order will be plac- ed in time for delivery during the summer holidays, Thos. Hanson and Walter Pearce received increases -in salary of $25 and $20, respectively, the same to date from `April Ist. Secrgtary Matt was instructed advertxse for tenders for coal up June 11th. Principal 'Redditt drew the Board s attention to a breach of discipline at ;the B.C.I. As the matter had been satisfactorily adjusted, no action was I taken. Accounts aggregating $299.07 were passed. The fuel bill was $191.03, ` and $40 went for the expenses of the Board to Toronto in connection with `the Kindergarten. The Board was invited to be pres-` :ent at West Ward School to-day (Thursday), when certicates are to be distributed and a silver medal awarded. , uitously. `On motion of Milne-Palling, the Board resolved to accept the offer of the Barrie ,Horticultural Society to provideower seeds to pupils grat- The distribution of seeds will be made through the teachers. This action on the part of the Soc- iety will, it is considered, be 23. Valu- able aid to nature study. 0 I I 1 4 1 1 I 1 Inspector s Report. -Inspector Mills, who recently in- i spected the schools, reported as fol- 1 lows :-The appearance of the new ` school at Allandale that we are all so proud of is being destroyed by ` soot from the soft coal which is used` 1 for the furnace. The soot is getting into the coldyair chamber and is be- ' ing blown into the rooms until the T walls, desks and floors are becoming thickly coated. This is owing to a ; serious defect in the chimney"which should be attended to at once. While . it does not seem probable that fire would originate from around, the fur- nace, if it should do so the children upstairs would have no other escape than to march over a floor burning right at the foot of the stairs and! in front of the doors of two classrooms of small children. If thought neces- sary protect the joists or ooring. 'In the primary room of this ;school there are 67 children enrolled, made up of Parts I. and II. The latter, 21 pupils, attend all day; 3rd class (highest in `-Part L), 19 pupils, are out during afternoon; 2nd class, 17 pupils, are out during forenoon; and Ist class attend from 9 to 10.30 and from 1.30 to 2.30. The condition after Easter-`with 15 more children may be imagined.` A teacher should be engaged till summer holidays -taking Part II. and highest class in Part I, ` .I am"p1eased `to report theoffer `of the 'Horticultura1'Society to pro- `vide ower `seeds gratuitously and give prizes-exclusively for `the child- ren. The teachers havegladly o- cred their assistance towards making itga .suc'ce_ss.
