The Honourable Mr. Fisher, Min- ister of Agriculture, has taken a special interest in this work and is very desirousof having iticontinued. 'I_ am directed to say that the Dairy Division will again co-operate with associations of zoeor more members, or owners of not less than 200 cows, for the season_of 1908, bydoing the testing, providing the necessary blank forms, _and assisting in the organization as heretofore, but the Minister. is of the opinion that the time has arrived when themembers of the associations may reasonably be asked to contribute something towards the cost of the work. If it is worth anything to a dairy- man to know the relative value. of his` cows as milk producers, -in order that he may improve his herd by a process of intelligent breeding and selection, it should7 be worth paying `for, in part at least. If it is not worth. anything to the owners of the herds it is certainly not worth any-` thing to anyone else. I .beg. therefore, to r_nake- the fol- lowing announcement in connection wyiththis work: ' ing a cow testing association at C0- wansville, Quebec The_ Department provided all the equipment and loan- ed each member the scales and nec- essary outt for taking and preserv- ing -the samples, furnished the re- quisite blank forms for keeping re- cords, made all the tests and compil- ed the reports, without` any charge. -qpauv u; uuuu. _ Mr. M. S. Madole "was nominated "for the Legislature by the Liberals Qf Lennox. " ' - 9 l_4_-3-A.X-..l At the beginning of "1906, 16 as- sociations. were orgamzedunder the auspices of the Department. Each member was required to provide his own outt for weighing and taking samples, but the Department of Ag- riculture provided the blank forms and made the tests without charge. "The work was continued on the same basis `in 1907, with a total of 52 as- sociations organized in the ditierent provinces as follows :--Quebec 27, Ontario 18, Nova; Scotia 2, Brince Ed- ward Island I, British Columbia 4. | In addition to making the tests free of cost, the Dairy Division has compiled. for each member a month- ly and a yearly statement of the in- aividual tests of his 'herd, and each `member has been furnished with. a copy of the monthly summaries of all tests made for the other associa- tions. Summaries of the monthly tests have been published in the `agricultural and weekly press or ibanada, so that every person who reads has thus had an opportunity of studying the results and judging of the importance of the --work. l For the season of 1908 the Depart- ment of Agriculture throu'gl1;'the Dairy Division `will. co-operdte with the cow testing associations `onethe following terms: * _ I %(d). The -Dairy Division will pio- vide all the necesgary blankfdrms, chemicals for, test1ng,_compile mon-' thly and yearly 1- ecords~ and forward them to each member without any charge except as `metitionedw in _(b).- In I9o5,a series of 30-day tests were conducted at seven places, the De- partment loaning the outts and do- ling all the work without cost to the owners of the herds as in I9o4. The "object of this work was to call at- tention to the `importance of the quesion and ,to create sutlicient in- terest in the matter to induce dairy- mmt to `organize for` the purpose of conducting a systematic testvof the individual cowsof their herds. The publication of these tests showed the great difference which is found in the yield of cows in the same herd, and of different herds in the same local- ity, V (a). The - members ;_ must` provide their own oub_t_s and ggree tp take samples acgordmg to mstruct1on_. (b). The` members _will.be reqtliz--. ed to pay -towards` the cost of the testing` at the rate r of 20 cents per cow for. the season," for herds of. 5 cows and _over. For herds of under 5 cows a, minimum charge of $1.00 .per herd .willdbe made.` (c).
