Then word came that only arbitration could et the works from them. The Company id. not show any disposition to be fair. Liber- alitv is required of us in-ever instance It is how much can they get? ow much can they claim? I for one believe we are paying too high a price, and,I for one do not feel like giving them one cent more. This town is quite prepared to carry out that award large as it is I am prepared to agree to payin the award and all it orders. But if the aterworks Co. .wish to mortgage their works for $80,000 that is no reason that we should `recoup the bondholders. We went into astraight agreement with the Barrie Waterworks Co. and we are carrying , out that agreement fai'hfully, and I believe. the laws or this country will stand by us. Reeve` McLean said the bondholders are asking too muoh--bv seeking the amount of award, the town to pay all the costs of the arbitration the interest from date of award and six months invadvance. the waiving all outstanding accounts against them. and the earning power of the plant from the date of the award to Nov. 30th, 1898. There is practically $5.000 between us andthe bond- holders. The bondholders should be willing to at least split the dierence. I1, Mr Bond saidsthat the consultations held were with a view to reaching a settlement without further litigation The stoclthold-' ers were wiped out of existence without a` dollar, and" he appeared now as representing the bondholders. After consultation with Mr Bruce. he informs me very emphatically that the bondholders cannot be he d to the _aw_ard. Being a stockholder, I felt like reachingan amicable settlement. After our negotiations on Saturday I telegraphed to bondholders and they said they would accept $82.600 in full of account `T a Mayor agreed to pay $80.062 60 To t amount in court he added $1,526 50 hydrant rental, and alsoa disputed ltcuollnt, $246.10, and consumable supplies, $300. That added up came to $83,205 63 due the Company. From this he took 33, I40 (half the expenses), which left $80.U62.62. I said I would under take between that time and to day to see if the bondholders would `accept $81,133 03 ($1,466 97 less than $82,600). I took the subject up with them. but in the meantime I had consultation with Mr. Bruce. He says the least that can be asked of` the bond holders is that they accept $8l.l33 03 with out being asked to pay $1 of expenses. The difference between the Committee s.conten- 'tion and the bondholders contention in o-ver $4.000. I am prepared to-day to conrm my statement "if you pass the necessary by- law withholding your claim to the money in . court the bondholders will discharge the .mortgage. ih$r"rvv;1i:';hen said :--You'are all A aware that an arbitration was held and an award given. -The Farmers Loan and Trust Company. of New York, who held a mort gage of $80,000 against the plant, were not made _a party to the arbitration and refused to auzreeto the award.
