I Hewas a` stone- mason, and in his earlier days worked two years on .Soott s. -monument in Edinburgh. He came to Canada in 1853, and spent two years in Quebec and Montreal, before settling in 0ril- lia, since when he has been intimately connected with the town and district. His zealous advocacy; of the extension of the Northern railway to Orillia at- tracted the attention of Sir Frank Smith, 001. Cumberland and Sir J. D. Edgar and they secured his services in addressing meetings throughout the dis- trict in support of that enterprise. He was also a familiar gure in political contests, was ever ready toldiscuss the questions of the `day either on or off the platform, and stumped the riding of North Simcoe for the late T. D. McUonkey and Dr. Ramsay. Mr. Jackson was one of the contractors for the erection of the rst Presbyter- ian -church, the` stone `church of St. James` parish, (torn down a few years ago to make room for the present edi- ce), the Methodist church and parson- age, the Church of the Angels Guard- ian,_ and many others. In October, l855,'he joined Orillialdivision of Sons of Temperance, and for many. years was one of its most active workers. He was an enthusiastic curler all his life, and organized the rst curling club in Orillia. He `married a sister of Dr. Thorburn, of the Civil Service, Ottawa, who, with one daughter, Mrs. J. A. Stevenson, survives him. Mr. Jackson has been contending with the disease which carried him off for a length of time, but he had not passed out of mind because his gure was no longer a familiar one in our streets, and many,` heard, while others at a distance will `read, of hi demise with sincere regret. Increase of deb. payments`... The Bacteria of Bay. A practical farmer talking about his haying lately, remarked how great a difference was made in the curingof hay if it was wet by rains. No matter , how quickly the hay was spread out and dried after being wet, it would be badly colored, and if put, while at all damp, in large heaps would rot. The reason for this, undoubtedly, say the authorities, is the presence of bacteria in the rain water which is gathered_in its passage through the air. These bac- teria in any damp body increase with enormous rapidity. The juices in hay or other vegetables are free from bac- teria, except where they are out or bruised, and as most of these juices are sweet, their drying down inside the outer shell of straw has a preservative effect. But in the work of gathering, the stalks of grass or other vegetation are usually more or less bruised, so that some air can get to the juices aside from what enters at the base. All know how quickly corn stalks will rot, even in the stock, if exposed to heavy rains. Then,-i though the a stalks may seem to dry out, there is enough dampness in- side to keep the outside -bacteria alive, and` the stalks will` rot when put in large heaps. Green stalks, it they have been got in _wit_hout_ rain, will keep much,`better.-.-London Free Press. Rapid Growth ofvsalmon. -The number of marked salmon cap- tured this season is much larger than is generally known. They "were hatch- ed in the fall of 1895, and after being marked by cutting. off the adipose n, were turned into the rivers` in the spring of 1896.. The fact of their capture proves that some of the sal- mon at least return to the river where they hatched in less than four years, the time in which scientic men who` have made a study of this matter say that it- takes the salmon to mature. As the marked sh were turned out in the spring of 1896, those caught this sea- son have been at large only a little over two years. The rst one `caught weighed only ten pounds, but the most of those caught since weigh over twen- ty pounds, and one weighed fty-seven pounds. It seems almost incredible that a salmon should grow to this size in less than twoiyears and a half, but there can be no doubt that the marked sh caught are some of those which were turned out in the spring of 1896. -Portland Oregonian. Canada and its Capital. The subiect is a large one, but in the skilful hands of the author it is made most interesting and instructive. Then is not a dull page to be found among the two hundred into which has been crowded a sketch of us aswe have been and as we are, which forms a valuable contribution to Canadian literature. The work possesses the virtue of entire freedom from political bias, and the con- stitutional and political features of our history are discussed in a broad and generous spirit . ' * The earlier chapters contain a most interesting his- torical sketch of the settlement of the Ottawa district. from the days of the intrepid French explorers ~ ' ' ' A number of very ne illustrations of the principal places of interest, photographs of the leading men, and an excellent letter press, contribute towardslmaking this volume an interesting and instruc-. tive addition to the library.-Toronto Globe.
