On Sunday morning about 11 o clock re was seen issuing through the rear roof of Mr. J. W. 0rchard s dwelling, and it was only a_ few minutes before the entire building was a mass of ames. Three congregations and two Sunday schools were in the various A churches at the time, and it was not long before the churches were emptied and scores of willing hands set to work to save the furniture, but the re had ' gained so much-headway that a piano and a few pieces of furniture were the - only articles saved. The re econ spread to the stables and sheds in the rear of the house, and from there to Alfred Armstrong's sheds and stables on an adjoining lot. Luckily the wind took a sudden veer to northward, send ing the ames to southward, thus aid ing the bucket and ladder brigade in , saving Mr. Armstrong s house, occupied by Mr. John Benson, and in fact the rest of the -village. Mr. and Mrs. Orchard s loss is very heavy. They had a very comfortable home surround- -ed by a garden of fruit trees, owers and ornamental shrubbery, which now all lie in ruins. They saved only what clothing they had on. Packed away in part of their house was some furniture, books and clothing belonging to Mr. F. O. Batten, who has been in "Lou Angeles, California, recuperating n his health since the death of his wife. - -~-v' , I: I-3`!
