On the same grounds a farmer might say that because wheat was worth a dollar in` '87, it is surely worth the same now. Now, Sir, we think differently, if wheat and potatoes are subject to supply and demand. so are school expenses and teachers.` Everything is cheaper now than in. 87, even brains; and we think that_ we, as taxpayers, who in '87 could earn a fair living, but who, with the times,-have had to come down, ought not to be taxed torluxuries we cannot afford. . We are taxed for new ideas in `ventilating, in heating, and in other new fangled fade in school management let us at the same time have some of the advantages which are to be had by the `use of these new fads, namely, teachers engaged on the same plan that all other people have to work on, that is, competition. `Latent School Board out down.expen_ses_ by getting a teach- ing stud` who know, because they have been taught, sthefnae of the modern or`- raugementl. vi "Whv should `we be bur- .liy._iall_' the changes, ._ in the first- 'p1soe.~ except. we hem; who have . 9`a*'zlIf 5!?~.9t:lisill; i g'i the lOOC.C,OOCCOCCC W4 2.1897: "i ~15:' s.
