Representatives from all the surrounding villages as well as from the County Town, availed them-i , selves of'the exceptional opportunity of` hearing Miss E Pauline Johnson, the Indian poetess and elocutionist, who was doubtless the chief feature of attraction in` the excellent program placed before the audience. At'the opening hour every available seat was occupied, many being under the compulsion of standing during the whole of the evening. The chair was taken by Rev. J. J. Cuchrane, who called upon Rev. J. Morgan to open the meeting withprayer, after which the program was entered upon`. Miss Galpio, of Thornton, and Miss Hewitt, of B1-aden s, each sus- tained their reputation in the rendition of their selections and gave them place as soloists. The Quartette, consisting of Mrs. -Cochrme and Miss Mary Henry, Mr. W. D. and R. D Henry, received rounds of applause. Miss Johnson, how-` ever, was the greatcentre of interest, and to say that she literally charmed her aud- lence, is but a mild way of expressing the fact. `She has a faultless articulation. a fascinating delivery, as well as a marvel- lous power of holding the attention of her audience. Her selections were all_ _of'her own composition and were recited in In- dian costume which made them doubly interesting, she being rapturously encored after each. Pithy addresses` were given by Revs. J. Morgan and Scott, of Cooks- town, Hewitt, of Braden s, and Rwbinson. of Thornton. The proceeds amounted to arm nn - - LID I .- and Paisley 8 warded 0 1;!
