This was accomplished at an expense of about $400, and -from the extensive use made | of it during the past navigation season, to- 9 gether with the -additional accommodatinxi 3 .-a.'orried by this work we feel that the ex- -penditure was wise and justifiable. The` next important work entered into beyondi ordinary engagements was that pertaining to Dunlop _St. . 'l`li fianmmiffnaa nfrnr Q-urn annnin] Iv|nnl>;nna up llulllutl _uu. | The Committee after two special meetings v 7 the conclusion that the time and the condi- tions were not favorable to do more than endeavor to put the street in a temporary state of repair. This decision was arrived at, in view of the fact, that awater main ; and trunk sewer, together with the many h ruse connections, had. -only been recently completed, and that suicient time had not elapsed to secure a good foundation for a permanent roadway. The temporary re- pairs to thisstreet from Mulcaster to Brad- ford Sts.. cost about 8200. and gave during several months fairly good satisfaction. '.l`o- - ward the end of the season, owing to an un- usually wet fall, it failed to such an extent as to convince most people that -nothing short of a permanent `roadway composed of ` either asphalt. block paving or, macadam < would give satisfactory results during very wet seasons. The Committee were very desirous of improving-the main leading roads entering our town, and with that view pur- chased a road grader. This they made use` `and after mature consideration arrived at ` I I I of to grade Bradford. Blake, Owen, John, and other streets. The three first named streets were subsequently gravelled, but owing to the small amount granted for that purpose we were unable to do more than give each street a thin coat of such gravel as the town supplied. The Committee | deemed it wise to institute the modern prin- ; ciple of_ narrowing, grading and bonlevard- ` i'ng some of our shorter streets, and for this purpose chose two streets upon which sewers 9 had been put down, viz : John and Worsley. We trust the improvement in appearance, togetherwit-h lessening thecost of keeping. in repair a narrower roadway, will commeu ' itselt to our successors, and that the pro- perty owners on other streets will emulate those on John and Worsley by aiding and assisting the corpora ion in beautifying our town by sodding`~and seeding the boulevards opposite their property when the new Coun- cil places them in as favorable a position as those on John and Worsley Streets; A very large amount of sidewalk was laid during the year, principally on Blake, Bayrield, Mulcaster and other streets, `together with a great quantity of repairs to old`sidewalks.
