Bird read a capital paper on Sir Walter Scott and selections from that author were read by Messrs. A. A. Hay, D Ross and H. Edwards. Mr Milden s criticisms were fair and judicious. To- morrow evening there will be a debate. This is the subject. Resolved that Imperraf Federation will he benecial to the colonies. For the armative, Messrs J. T. We deeply regret that Mrs. J ames Craig, Mary street, fell a few days 0, just out- side of the back door of her dance, and broke one of her arms. _ v---._v- - ----.---` For the hrst time in the history of Simcoe the County Board of Examiners were called together on Saturday as a court to consider the first two suspensions of teachers cer- ticates in the county. It appears that the Rev. Thos. McKee, Inspector for South Simcoe had cancelled the certicates of John Wauless and one Beatty, the reasons ' given being in the one case incapacity and in the second that the teacher was following another occupation. Both objected to the suspension and appealed to the County Board. The Wanless case was the first gone into; he had a second-class non-pro- fessional certificate on which he could teach another year, and after hea.rin'g the evidence on both sides the certicate was restored to him. Beatty was running a butchering business, rising at 2 a in. killing and ped- dling his meat before school hours, which the Inspector claimed left him without energy for school work. Anderson, seconded by Mr. Miller, that we the Warden and Council of the Corporation of the County of Simcoe. in Council assembled, desire to express to Her Majesty and their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of \Vales and the mem- bers of the Royal Family our profounul sor- row and universal regret at the sanl loss they have sustained in the death of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale. And that a copy of this resolution be sent by our Clerk to His Execellency the Governor General, re- spectfully requesting him to convey the same to Her Majesty and the members of the Royal Family, as an expression of the deep, tender and loyal sympathy of the peo- ple of the County of Simcoe for them in their sad bereavement. A large and enthusiastic meeting of the above, the result of the intense excitement which had possessed the school since the nominations, was held on Friday afternoon last in the assembly room. As usual, the election of president was the principal cause of interest Throughout the election it was evident that it was a question as to l whether the ladies could put the nominee in. or whether the gentlemen could.
