Read this and act. on its Teachings. The inuence of fatigue in the evolu- tion of infectious disease is a subject gravely. discussed by medical men. Nothing in the whole round of pathogenic causes could be more important for the generality of over-exercised and over- worked to consider. Whether undue strain comes in the toil of business or the whirl of athletic dissipation it equally pre- pares the system for many diseases, the_ germs of which lurk in our food and drink, or in the very dust laden air we breathe; Some ingenious experiments have been made before the Paris. Society of Biology with various animals_subjected to fatigue by being placed in a squ1rrel s cage so turned by a wheel that they are forced to travel at a rate_of nearly two miles an hour. Under this treatment guinea pigs and rabbits soon succumbed to vertigo, dogs and cats bore it better while white rats proved the most endur- ing. But when twelve of these rodents- which had best withstood the enforced fatigue of the whirling cage-were inocu- lated with twelve drops apiece of the at- teuuated virus of bacilli of anthrax an important discovery was made. Four of the twelve white rats, after receiving the injection, were left quietly alone and they survived. ~ The remaining eight, inoculat- ed exactly asthe others, were subjected to overwork and fatigue in the squirrel s cage, and seven of them died in less than three days. The experiments clearly prove that overworked or wornout framers, whether human or animal, are highly sus- ceptible to the vulturous attacks of pathogenic bacteria and microbian poisons. One obvious reason for this is that the acid of the gastric juice, "Koch, De Bary and other bacteriologists have proved, kills the bacilli of the anthrax and other disease germs in the vegetative states ;. but when the system is fatigued or over- wrought the secretion of the gastric juice is diminished, and hence, the infectious germs gain an easy entrance and rm foot- hold. It is known also that over-exertion whether from servile labors or athletic sports, is fruitful .of irritable heart. The morbid_ athleticism of the day breeds ripe subjects for heart troubles and allied affections. Once the heart is weakened by over-exercise or muscular strain, says Dr. Richardson, of London, the stomach is affected and digestion render- ed imperfect. the nervous system is im- plicated and the brain fails to perform its active duties.. Times of March 11th. respecting a sale in the Commercial Tea Sale Rooms : usual excitement prevailed yesterday on the 0'ering by Messrs. Gow. Wilson J; Stanton, tea brokers, in public auction of a small lot of Ceylon tea, from the Gartmore estate. This tea possesses extraordinary quality in liquor, and is composed almost_ entirely of small `golden tips . which are the extreme ends of the small succulent shoots of the plant, and the preparation of such tea is of course most costly. `Competition was of a very keen description. The bidding. which was pretty general to start with, com- menced with an offer of 1 1s. per pound; as the price advanced to 8 many buyers dropped out,_ and _at this price about five wholesale dealers were willing to purchase Offers were then made up to about 9 93. 3 E by three of the leading houses, the tea being ultimately knocked down to the Mazawattee Ceylon Tea Company at the most extraordinary and unprecedented price of 10 123. 6-1. per pound.- Money must be plentiful amongst the [ kind of people described by the London ; u Um t It isexceedingly difficult to nd any actual cases to illustrate this point, since either natural or articial selection has aiways been present. The apparent effort of disuse in causing the diminution of cer- tain organs, such as the reduced wings of some birds in oceanic islands, and the very small or aborted eyes of some of the animals inhabiting extensive caverns, can ` be well explained by the withdrawal of the cumulative agency of natural selection, and by the economy of growth as by the direct effects of disease. The following facts, however, seem to show that special _ skill derived from practice. when continued \ for several generations, is not inherited, F and does not therefore tend to increase. ` flu... ._.....:.._r.-I -1_:n _s _-_ _, . 4- .1 A Imvortucana mo. ,_V No better evidence of the fact that ,B1ood Bltters is a certain remedy for 3 (gm-` :1isorder'can\be asked than that of Mn `,3 : ` V `K .- t, of Hull: P` T; whose wifewas cu ot cancer by B_-B-B` ,,,. hmily dootoris certain that the d1se839 5 \ and thatiqig we cured. 4 -gt: A-.4!
