I Mr. Craig was the next speaker. He clearly dened his position with reference to the Equal Rights deputation. The story had been told, by an individual named Reid, that Mr. Craig had denied at a meet- ing at Grenfell that he had accepted the Equal Rights platform. It appears that this same Reid, who by the way, is a sort of Grit touter, went out to Grenfell for the purpose of trying to get something that might be said detrimental to Mr. Craig. It was the answer to a question put to Mr. Craig by Reid, that he had distorted and Lput a meaning to which was utterly un- justified by the facts. Mr. Reid rushed up to the platform and undertook an explanation, but he only made matters worse. Mr. Cres- wicke sustained the truth of Mr. Craig's statement, and said he could get thirty witnesses to corroborate the statement he had made. ll._ fI,-2.J._ l____|_ ..L_L-...-..I. __J L2- -`_-.. He explained the origin of the Equal Rightsmovement and repudiated the idea that it was intended to aid either `political party. He demonstrated the necessity of the Equal Rights movement, to counteract the encroohinents of the Roman Catholic hierarchy on the integrity of our Public School system. S. He claimed to be a Reformer, his sympathies being all on that side, but he could not support Mr. Mowat s I policy of truckling to the Roman Catholic power to retain oiae. A large part of Mr. Fraser's speech was devoted to Rev. D. D. McLeod. Mr. McLeod s letter denouncing the late emanifesto of the Equal Rights Association was analysed with energy and thoroughness, and in the light of the Report of the , Commissioners on Public Schools in Ontario. The rev. gentleman's inconsisten- cies and false charges against the signers of the Equal Rights manifesto, excited Mr. Fraser's righteous indignation and he ex- pressed the wish that Mr. McLeod was there, as he would like to see him come on that platform and there proclaim himself a better man than Rev. At that time there was not a single resident priest in in all this north country where there are now many churches situated in ourishing parishes. He referred to the diiculties and hardships that the Holy Catholic Church has had to endure in the different ages of the world. How its ministers have been reviled and stoned, as they sometimes are now, but that by perseverance under all these diicnlties they would be sustained. The cross which miraculously appeared on Constantine's standard was the sign of vic- tory, and it will be so to the end of time. It is wonderful how the church spreads in face of all opposition. HR. J. Han 1-onto, has established an agency for ge '3 furnishings, with mcbrady & moor . The Outlook With Meredith. This is the last full week of the Mount- Merdith election campaign. The outlook is altogether with Mr. Meredith. He is making a tour of the Province. only equalled by the progress of Sir John Macdonald in 1377 8. He speaks to thousands every day and his addresses are such as to make many converts to his side. Personally he is the most forceful man in the szht. The Mere- dith candidates stand to win seventeen con- stituencies and to lose four. The Catholic vote has been conceded by Conservatives as solid for the Mowat party and therefore as not able to cost Meredith any more votes; whereas,` on account of this soldarity, a large number of Protestant Reformers are making up their minds` either to obstaia from voting for the Reforlncandidate or to vote for the Opposition standard-bearer.- Hamilton Spectator.
