A most win any vvuucu suulvvc llnllo The reat Agricultural, Industrial and Art Ex ibition of Centre Simcoe is near at hand and all necessary preparations are: being made for it. The directors are sparing no pains to make the show of 1889 the best ever held in `Barrie. So far as grain. roots, vegetables and the productions of farm and garden are concerned the season has been most propitious and the best productions of desirable change for the better exhibition of. poultry has been made. When the extent and value of the poultry interest are con- sidered that part of the exhibition becomes one of the most interesting and important, and therefore should demand proportionate attention. This has been done `under Mr. Bothwell s supervision. The coops have been removed from the open shed on" the east side of the grounds to the basement of the -grand stand. They have been arranged along the centre of that basement with every convenience for the safety and comfort of the birds and to facilitate inspection. No doubt some of the nest birds in the county will be on exhibition. The shedswhere the poultry were previously exhibited will be - utilized for agricultural implements. Thou b not as well adopted for that urpose as con d be desired, it will neverthe ess, remove the main objections which have been urged by manufacturers of implements why they did not exhibit. Shelter from the Weather is largely secured by these sheds. VVe hope that all parties will harmoniously work to make this show the very best county show in the Dominion. This can be done if all who have an interest in the. progress of agricultural pursuits and other industries in the county rise to a consciousness of their duty to themselves and the county. Should the weather be ne we condently predict for the Great Central the most eminent suc- cess. - l:I__$ U WEST END METHODIS'il`iCl-IURCH. Rev. Few people are probably . aware of the . amount of labor bestowed by Mr. Matthews on the Maybriok case before he d cided to ' advise to commute the sentence. From - the first the Home Secretary entertained a ' stron feeling of the guilt of the accused, and t e sciintic inwstigations he made subsequently all tended to conrm the impression. He w however, handicap ed by the , inexplicab e weakness of us- tice' Stephen, a who certainly lost that forensic. strength with which his colleagues of the bench and bar` credited him. The judge. resolutely declined to express his personal opinion on the merits of the case, i andueontented himself with repeating over and over again his summing up. t was 7 fair, under these circumstances, that Lord Salisbury should be called in, and the solution ultimately adopted was wholly * based on the. `Chancellor s belief that although the administration of arsenic was fully proven, there was a scintilla of doubt as to its beingthe cause of the death-. Strong representations were made to the Home Secretary that a detailed expl\na- tion of the reasons for the. decision arrivtd at be made to Parliament, but Mr. Matthews declined to create a- precedent. .
