A B3A'NPT0No` May 24.'--A serious acci-' dent occurred on the main line of the Grand Trunk railway here to-night be- tween eleven and twelve o'clock. The special returning to Toronto from Guelph with the Oddfellcws excursion on board reached here on time. After leaving the station, however, the last car through some means or other broke loose, and lagging behind tightened, and then "broke the bell cord. This the engineer. not knowing what had happened, mistook for a signalfrom the conductor to stop. The result was that when the remainder of the train came to a stop the detached car ran into it. It was derailed, and the pas- sengers in it and in some of the coaches in front -were thrown from one end 01 the car to the other. The lights were ex- tinguished and a panic seized the passen- gers, who, in their mad e`orts to escape trampled upon one another, inflicting in some cases serious injuries. The following isa. summary of reports by correspondents of the Toronto Bureau of Industries on the condition of_ crops and . live stock, and the rate of wages and supply of farm laborers in the Province : I-vIaItI|uLJ vs. susua LIIIJULVLB ll; IILIU L LUVLIIUU Q The reports of correspondents show that in most of the fall wheat districts of the Province the winterwcather was very unfavorable to the crop. Heavy rains carried off the snow over wide areas, leav~ ing elds exposed to intense cold in Janu- ary and February ; sheets of ice lay in hollows and on low ground during the latter month ; and alternate freezing and thawing prevailed `throughout Marci`. Killed, smothered, and heaved our. express the tenor of a -great many reports, and in portions of the country from ten` to seventy per cent. of the wheatland has been ploughed up or re- sown with other gram. In a few sections` there are complaints of too much spring rain, and in others they unthrifty appear-' pearance of many elds is. attributed to the lack of rain. Of the six Lake Erie .counties,'where nearly a quarter of the fall wheat acreage of the Province lies, Welland is the only one which promises a full crop, while the adjoining county of Haldimand is likely to be much short of __ ..-.._.....A 1:`u9np\v\$:u-can In `kn unuuvknmn 'l..10l\llI.L|Illu. an IIBULJ UV uv auuusa uaauau Va an average. Excepting in the southern part of Lambton, the crop in the Lake 1 Huron counties wintered well, and its` 3 present condition is very satisfactory. In Grey and Simcoe, on the Georgian Bay, the prospect is not cheering, and the acreage has been reduced to a consider- able extent. The West Midland counties give varying .reports-those' for Middle- , sex, Oxford and Brant being the least ' favorable. Duiferin promises well. and in Perth the outlook is almost invariably pronounced very good. Over the country from Wellington to Durham, and between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, serious injury was caused by ice lying on the elds in winter, and the crop is very ur.-` even. In York and Simcoe counties es- pecially ice and "exposure proved to be very destructive to the wheat plant, and a large breadth has been ploughed up. ' Lincoln and Northumberland alone, of the Lake Ontario counties, give promise of a good harvest. In the East Midland counties the crop is variable, and in the St Lawrence and Ottawa group it win- _ tered safely and makes a ne show, ex- cepting where some bad effects were left by ice and snow in parts of Grenville, Carleton and Lanark. `The fine growing, weather with which the country has been favored since the middle of April, has greatly improved the_'_prospeot of the crop, and a smaller area has been ploughed up in consequence than seemed at all prob- able when the snow disappeared; The indications are, however, that without unusually favorable or unfavorable weather from now until harvest the yield `will fall nearly a fth short of the aver- ` age of the past four years. an , __ -1,..;._ -1; Aug `Ln nvhnlnl 25 vl. vanv I.-uuv -v..... ., .___,., The reports on clover are on the whole favorable, and the crop `is at least two weeks earlier than last year. In the northern and. eastern counties the green anpeamnce of crops vpijesents `a striking and favorable contrast to theirl backward state last spring, and for all} parts of the Province _the reports on spring wheat, barley, oats and pease are very cheering. Apparently: however, thel breadth of. spring wheat is less than last year, while that 1 of pease and barley is nwnn I-.91-, J '-- 1 ~- -~-- - - greater. The reports on live stock are generally favorable. CHICAGO, May 24.-Tha following crop summary will appear in this week s issue of the Farmer's Review :-Crop bulletins . from the spring and winter wheat belts, east of the Rocky Mountains, show no special change from that of last week be- yond the fact that serious damage is re- ported by chinch bugs in portions of Kan- sas and Southern Illinois. In Bond, Hamilton, and Richland counties, in Southern Illinois, the damages by these insects_are quite serious, and the general outlook is not as promising as a month ago. In Johnson and Osborne counties. in Kan- sas, the Hessian y and chinch bug are causing great injury. In Allan and Wyandotte counties, Ohio, the presence of grasshoppers is noted, but not in such numbers as to occasion serious damage. Reports of damage to growing grains by heavy rains come from portions of Ohio, Iowa and Nebraska. Reports from Dakota and Minnesota as to spring wheat pros- pects are of a" most encouraging character. In Nebraska small grains are just" begin- ning to show and are looking well. Re- ports from Iowa both as to wheat and corn are very good. Reports trom Indi- ana are of a favorable tenor. It is de- clared that.a ner growth of vegetation was probably never before known in that State at this season of the year. In Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee the harvest will begin fully ten days earlier than usual. Wheat in these States is heading out nely.
