C., from a successful and satisfactory voy- age of submarine explorations, covering severalmonths. The Blake anchored in the Gulf stream between the Forey rocks . and the Bahama banks, 200 miles east of . the deepest part of the Atlantic, 1,500 fathom ' in depth, discovered by Capt. Pillsbury two years ago. The Blake an- chored in 481 fathoms and succeeded in dredging up a large quantity of animal and ve table life, among which will pro- bably found, many species hitherto comparatively, if not entirely, unknown. Though Capt. Pillsbury has not yet com- pleted the calculations bearing upon the velocity of deep-sea currents. he is con- vinced that in lower depths the change of the velocity is not so great as" toward the surface. The " surface currents "are stronger with the deection of the moon. It is plain from his . observations during the past three months that thestrength of current of the Gulf stream is invariab- ly on the Florida instead . of the Bahama side of the stream. He has found the temperature to range -from forty-two to eighty-one degrees. The greatest velocity of the stream at the surface is about four knots, but the uctuations are frequent , and great. Capt. Pillsbury says that. when his observations shall have been properly tabulated and his calculations deducted he will be able to rive the scien- tific world a treat as to deep-sea sounding. current, velocity, animal and vegetable life and the earth's surface for miles un- auun. Employment and Education. A-good education, says Dr. M_cGosh, qualies _a man to do adozen different things, where an ignorant man- could- do only one. Education also.euables a man to rise in any sphere of. labor in which he is em loyed. The truth of this is*es- pecia y valuable in theserdays of change- in vocations. Science is specializing every employment ; mechanism . istaking the place of, the manual labor, and in thisaap- -preaching readjustment _of vocations, will prove the only individual safeguard. What industrial future I is there -for the man who can use his hands only when a machine is invented that takes the place of_ a thousand pair of hands}? Obviously, the practical need of intellect_ua1;;quali- cation is far greater in this age, and will continue to increase with the progress of humanity, It is the tendency of every trade to become an art, `and of `every arti- san `to become an artist in his specialty. And in this lies the true secret of the great need of industrial education. ` ' t-r?*-- A human Barometer. The -man with rheumatism can feel_ the ap- proach of bad weather in his aching jeinte.
