_--_ _.......v --u- nviru . V ovouoslavp Q` vngvvvvano Many have listened with delight to the exquisite Irish melody, Kathleen Ma- vourneen--but few are aware that the writer is still alive. Many years ago when the late Mdlle. Titiens was in the zenith of her fame, during a tour in` the United States, she received a" card from the composer, Mr. F. N. Crouch, who desired to meet her after her perform- ance ; the audience had rapturouslv en- cored her rendation of Kathleen Ma- vourneen, and though it was one of the` favorite songs in her repertoire, she had ' never heard of Crouch, and doubtless re- garded her song in question as one of those national airs which are composed by no one knows whom and become popu- lar no one knows how. Mr. Crouch had no diiculty in proving` that "Kathleen Mavourneen was really his composition. Many graceful things were said to him on the subject by Mlle. Titiens, and the in- cident of his self-proclamation and due. recognition had the effect of calling pub- lic attention to the important fact--im- portant at least. for himself--that he was still alive. * A New York journal, now announces that Mr. Crouch has been for some time engaaed in an autobiography, which, as -he was for many years a pro- minent gure in the artistic society of London, will` doubtless be interesting. The rising generation of New Zealand is not answerable for the debts thus con- tracted` by English adventurers.
