ya..- ---.- .a.vyv an vvu-u envllulxlllll uuauunsgvu. N Wednesday last Mr. T. N. Stevenson, proprietor of the Dominion Restrauat, Oril- lia, was charged by the _License Inspector, with selling liquor without license on two occasions. Mr. P. J. King, Barrister, and Mr. Hugh Hammond were subpoenaed as witnesses. In one case, Mr...King testified he was out of town on the day specied, so it was dismissed. a In the second, he stated that he" and Mr. Hammond were having ' oysters at the restaurant, and he gave the proprietor 250. to get them a bottle of ale ; that defendant returned with theale, and gave him l0c.change, refusing to take any profit on the transaction, as he did not keep ' or sellliquors. At the request of Mr. Ms- Cosh, who appeared for the" prosecution, the magistrates reserved "their decision un- til the Attorney-General could be consult- ed.- When the Attorney~General has given his decision we will all know either how Mr. Stevenson voted at the last election or how he intends voting at the next one. Mr. Harvey : pamphlet on the Readers is out this week. We hope to_,review it soon. - -..-...-u-.-ugaun of more than usual importance will soon have to be chronicled. Mr. Harvey, the Principal of the Model School, has resolved to accept a ver lucrative polition in the book trade in ew Zealand. RUMORS have been circulating for some weeks back gwhich tend to show that the summer of 1882 was not the only one in which frauds were committed in connection with the ex- aminations. We sincerely hope that the matter may not turn out as bad as report- ed, butthe prospects of such being the case are not briszht. Honest candidates seem to be scarce. According to report the frauds were committed in the summer of 1881. ....... .........~...~.............-.....---cu.-v-up--u-u--.--n--.0-a.-u.u-.IIo. Edited by J. M. Mr. Mere ith the leader of the opposition referred briey, and with perfect stood taste to the state of educational matters at paesent. With great fairness he admitted that the opposition was frequently led to make unfair criticisms on educational matters simply because they proceed from the overnment of the day. The natural concusion is just, what we have all along maintained that educational matters ought to be separated from party politics. One evenin% when Mr. Faweett returned from work he ound two little child ren cryina on `the floor and no mother in the house. The eldest was a little more than two years of age. They appeared to have been alone all day, as the mother left almost im- mediately after he had none to work. The youngest child died a few weeks afterwards ; the other isvstill alive. Both were sent to the elder Mr. Fawcett s and the youn man broke up house and went to work at Onllia. There he became acquainted with Miss Emma .Rix, daughter of Mr. George Rix, and also became acquainted with the fact that Mrs. Fawcett had resumed` her maiden name. Miss. Rix and Mr. Fawcett fell iulove with each other. He told her his history, and both a pear. to have honestly believed that the esertion, coupled with the wife repudiating her hns- band's name, left him free to marry again. They were accordingly married in J one last by the Rev. Mr. ll. McKee, of Orillia. But before this Miss Rix had a cousin who had married a fellow named William Russell. Young Fawcett sold seven head of cattle to him last March. The price was one hundred and thirty dollars. Russell, as we have been informed paid thirty dollars cash, and seventy five dollars a fortnight afterwards. When Mr. Fawcett was going to be married he asked for the remainder. Russell hadn't the money. but as Mr. Fawcett says, _oHered his note instead. V This was in the middle of April. As between two prospective relations Mr. Fawcett thought such a formality un- necessary. After his marriage he iuetly ,_re- minded Mr. Russell of the indebteiiiiess. but Mr. Russell repudiated it. A suit was the consequence. A few days before the trial, as we are informed Mr. Payne a brother of Mrs. Russell approached Mr. Fawcett and informed him- that if the suit was not withdrawn a charge of bigamy would be laid against him. The suit was not withdrawn and Mr. Fawcett was promptly arrested. The prelim- inary examination was held on ,VVed- nesday the 14th instant before the Mayor of Orillia The first wife was subpceuaed, but refused to have anything to do with the prosecution. She was compelled to admit however, that she had been married to the prisoner, but she left him with the in- tention of never returning, or ever c`aiming their children, or hearing his name. Of course, the Mayor had no all-ernative but to commit him` for trial. The young man was therefore brought to Barrie on Tuesday evening. He was accompanied by his second wife, his. father and his lawyer Mr. P. J. King, of '0rillia. Be elected to be tried by a jury and was admitted -to bail, himself in one thou- sand dollars, and his father and Mr. T. Win- each. The case will come off at the June sessions. The wife that deserted hcr helpless children `can scarcely be said to occupy a very high order inithe animal creation, but we would close her even above the man who would take such a revenge for the attempted collection of a lehf. In contrast to this was the devotion of the young wife who was `quite indi`erent whether he was hailed or not if she would only be allowed to stay in jail with him. We` believe she would not survive a six month s_ separation. Of course the law-has been vio- lated, although we believe without criminal intent. As the tint wife entirely repudiates any connection with this prosecution it is to be hoped the Government will, if necessary, mterposo its clemency in the matter. _w";ILLIAa\!'
