The whole distance is 1,048 miles. The return voyage was made from Monday morning at 11 o clock to Wednesday, 3 p m. ; seine 52 hours. The 0,. Llitference in time, coming and going is f,., partly to be accounted for by the fact that B, the Ste. Marie river can t berun in safety. after dark by so large a vessel as the Cam- pana,'and going up she didn t reach the of mouth of the river till nightfall, so had to _,_, lie over at `St. Joseph s Island till day- ` break, while no stoppage on this account V had to be made on the return trip. Just . here some account of the beauties `and pleasure of the lake trip and of the ports passed may be apropos and interesting. Going up, Owen Sound was reached at - 9.30 p.111. The town is situated some 15 c miles inland on the river Sydenham, and the run up the river or harbor is delightful Q especially on a still beautiful moonlight h, night as was our fortune to enjoy. Most of the town is on the right bank of the t1, river and is prettily situated. The char- (1, acter of the site being level for a short dis- tance back, then gradually rising tea high ` range of hills which form a background to the place. and afford commanding views for private residences. There is consider- able shipping now in the `Sound and the ,1 decks are fullyhalf a mile long. Altogether, tc Owen Sound, by moonlight impressed us a, - favorably. Next morning at ? o'clock we sighted Bear's Rump Island on right and 9' Flower Pot Island on left, after which we passed Cove Island with lighthouse on, to the left of us. `Here we come to the open 1,, lake." It is a lovely morning, the water being barelyruilled and the sky overhead clear and blue, the air being quite balmy and summer like. Away oil` on our lar- board bow we see a flotilla of steamers and schooners,` some 5 orli. 8 or 10 miles to the north of Cove Island are to be seen several large islands, names unknown. Are told now, they are Tub and F'itzwil- liam islands. Oil` to the north-west of these Manitoulin Island can just be dis- cerned in the distance, 15 to 20 miles away. Our course is W. by N.\V., and straight ahead of us lies the open lake with land to be seen nowhere. As the sun rises higher the morning becomes still more beautiful and delightful, and groups of passengers gather on the forecastle and on the hurri- cane decks to enjoy the gentle zephyr that fans us with its freshness in _ the face. , The scene is indescribably charming as the -otilla afore mentioned pass us on the left and we leave in the wake Cove Island. We are staming away at the rate of '15 miles per hour, and icon the mainland of On-. tario fades from view. At 10 o'clock we pass Grand Duck Island--the most west- erly of the Manitoulin group-6 or 7 miles away to the right of us. There is a light- house on its `west end and it appears well ' wooded. Oil to thopsouth-west and east of us nothing is to be seen but one wide expanse of waters nor a solitary living crea- ture insight, save now and again a few sea-gulls which circle around the ship and occasionally dip into the` water. We pass , Cockburn Island on left `about 2, o'clock. - At 3.30 the mainland of - the, North Shore ' looms-in view and shortly afterward St. '_ Joseph and Drummond islands are sighted`; St. Joseph, Island is reachedaliout 7o clock : ;'nd`.we`tie' up there for the night ata-place. .-. `named Hilton. Silver Islet is reached at 9 o clock. and a short stay made there. The little islahd barely an acre or so in extent is covered with steam mills and the red re- fuse of the mines. The mines are not yielding much just now, butthere is pros- iects of a vein being reached soon richer than any heretofore struck. Strangers are not allowed to enter the mines, so those of us who would have relished-had to furego -the adventure of a descent in their dark and gloomy depths, some thousands of feet. beneath the surface. As we rounded Thun- der Cape into Thundel Bay, or what may called the Bay of Port Arthur, the grandest view of the whole tr p was ob- tained, a view which Inay be l): st described from the high ground back of Purt Arthur village, a position which the writer vCt`.t1- Died in little `later on. Thunder Cape is directly in front of the village, 18 miles distant, but its great height. makes it ap- pear less than half that far away. Rio Island about the same distance to the right is 1,300 feet high and Fort Willis-.m Moun- tain on the mainland 4 or 5 miles to the south reaches an altitude of 1100 feet. The Cape, Rio and other islands almost enclose the bay _ which tourists compare to the far famed Bay of Naples. Arrived at Port Arthur we had to `do the village, see the `sights and old friends. Port Arthur is perhaps the most stirring place of its size in Canada to-day. Just now. it is -made the headquarters or rather basis of C. P. R , operations and navvics throng the streets daily, jostling with sailors, im- migrants, newly arrived passengers and The shipningpis very (:Xi'.:.IlSlV`. never less than from 25` to 30 craft of all kinds in the harbor at one time. There are wharves extending out on all sides and the C. P. R., are tuilding extensive docks. citizens. The Government aie about letting the contract for a breakwater 1,000 feet lung which is eventually to be a mile in length. Coal is being brought in large quantities from Lake Erie ports and shipped `West. Buildings principally frame are rapidly going up everywhere through the village and the saw and hammer sound the `hum industry. All this work makes Port Arthur a very busy place and an objective point for all classes. The population is not more than 1,500, yet they already have `some 6 or 7 lawyers. Merchants, mechan- ics and laborers are all apparently doing well, but perhaps hotel-keepers (of whom there must be a score) are reaping the ` richest harvest of any, not only in their `gin parlors butat the tables which barely afford sitting room for their guests. The Queen s and the Pacic are the leading - hotels. They ought to be lirst-class for the charge made 33 and $2 per day, but their fare is no better and their accommo- dation much poorer than that of our princi- pal town hlotelsn The village is nicely situ- ated, part y on at and partly on rising ground which extends for several miles along the shore and for half a mile back to a high range of high and rocky hills, so there is ample room for a `goodly sized town, but we scarcely think it will ever amount to more than 5 or ti thousand in population. The land about the village appears to be nearly all rock and muskeg, although it is claimed that V there is good farming country in the Kaministiquia. val- ley and in Black Clay County, 30 miles away. Port Arthur s principal citizens profess much faith in the idea that it will be a great manufacturing and distributing point for the Nor West. but there is no water power and Winnipeg cuts it off from all good country to the west no for these and other obvious reasons we fail ' to see ground for tlllie lgipe that in them lies. The shipping is t e anding's mainstay. 'But how thatalone is going to make a city there isa query for us. Until the com- pletion of the Lake Superior )oltl0n of the C. P_. R.', Port Arthur wtli, 1lln(l0Ubt(lly continue to be a -lively and progressive place, but that done its progress must be slow.
