--The reports from different parts of the country are very conioting as to the state of the crops. Haying is now about nished, and all agree that it is an `enormous yield, and has, in the majority of instances, been housed without damage. -The oonict of opinion is ` rinoipally with regard to the fall wheat. hat it is rusted all admit but there is a wide divergence as to the amount of dams e in- icted. Some say that the crogeis practically destroyed. others that it will half a crop, and others again that the rust as yet has not touched the stalk and has done no consider- able harm. It is probable that all are right, that in some sections the grainis not greatly dam ed, while in others it. is nearly if not entire y destroyed. In some elds that we have seen the rust has certainly reached the stalk, `and even the head, while in others the damage appeared not to be so great. 0 u Barley is coming on fast and will be a fair average crop.~ Spring wheat does not look well, but ts d arethriving. Reports of h t ?:om`I:lhepg:.eat western and northern f'ar:s are not very encouraging. , . The men were engaged in re- pairing the structure and were laboring to lift a heavy timber out of the water when Coun- cillor Sam. Caldwell, the Senator from the Pacic Slope, appeared upon the scene. Like the willing man he is he proffered assistance, which was gladly accepted. Mr. Caldwell placed one foot on the wharf and the other on the steamer, spat on his hands, and just pre- pared to throw that stick of timber clear over the depot. Such mighty strength did the Senator put forth that though the stick did not move the steamer did. It moved side~ ways and the space between the 1ifter?s feet became wider and wider. Before he knew it his feet were so wide apart that it was impos- sible to step either way. There was one con- vulsive shriek for help, one wild despairin ` asp at eternal space, and then ker lunk ` m struck that piece of timber wit every bone in his body and plunged into the water like a catfishafter a minnow,-new clothes and all. With assistance he quickly escaped from his perilous position, but thereafter the workmen at the wharf were decreased by one. This column is open` to all who write in good faith. '1`he Directors have very wisely decided to abandon the cheap method of conducting the Show and this year will sprre no expense to make it a success. Consequently the list of prizes has been greatly enlarged andthe value of the prizes increased. In all $3,000 will be offered for competition making a prize list second to that of no Riding Association in the Dominion. A very large number of special prizes will be offered which will doubt- less provide attractions acceptable to all. Among these will be a Band competition for a prize of $100, lady and gentlemen riding, rac- mg, &c., 850. Further articulars will be given in a later issue, but may rest satised that it will be to their interest to be in Barrie on Oct. 8th and 9th, the dates of the show. [ -.~The Reformed Episcopal Church has undergone renovation in the work of frescoing in water colors. by Geo. Dudley, who claims to be the originator of every design used. The ceiling is annelled with an extensive de- coration of lea ornament with a crimson band at the corners. The pauuels are a tint of deep cream color with other tints of greys to - match, making a. beautiful combination. The walls are tinted a lilac shade, with crimson band running along top of wainscotting, and above that an ornament of neutral tint. Over windows runs a crimson ribbon ornamented at ends. Top of walls is a freeze of the East Lake design, making the tone of color and finish very free. Altogether, the general ap- pearanee is very ne, and gives the observer an idea that men that understand such work, have been at it ; and it is a pity such a ceiling as that in the Town Hall should not be deco- rated in the same way. ,-v-. , u)U'lW -100,000 (hllnrs to loan at 10W 75935. bY `, Bu-rig Loan and Savings Company, Bothwell I Block Barrie. , 14- to~-Srnart intelligent boy wanted immedinteli `earn the` rintmg business.
