The case in question is valuable from a political point of viewin- asmuch as _ it thiiows considerable light. upon the methods resorted to by the pairty of purity as found in the Dis- trict of Muskoka, to carry their ends. Be it known then that the Township of Ryer- son is peopled principally by Grits of a de- based kind-1f such can be without in`- fringing upon the original patent. At the last election Mr." Johnston, of that Town- ship, was duly appointed as scrutineer for Mr. Fauquier. He was duly sworn in by the Returning Oicer, a Mr. Alexander, of thesame baliwiok. Of course the Return- ing Ofiicer and all the oicials about were Grits, a fact that Mr. Johnston soon learn- ed to his cost All through the day he was openly opposed and villied by the Re- turning Oflicer, but being a_ man of con- siderable spunk he held to the position. _ . We have not space to detail the various indignities he was compelled to suffer dur- ing the day. About four o c1ock, `however, 'a man named Barr entered the booth and attempted to vote. Mr. Johnston knew he had no vote, and Barr, on oath in the witness box, admitted that he. had no vote and knew it at the time. The Returning Oflicer not only gave Barr a ballot paper wherewith to deposit his vote but refused , to have him sworn and refused also to note }Mr. Johnson's objection. Mr. Johnston ` quietly insisted upon the objection being noted and in reply was told -that if he did not keep his mouth shut he would hear- rested. He still insisted and the Return- - ing Oicer ordered the constable, Mr. Todd, to arrest him. Mr. Johnston re- fused to be removed from the room, and I vMr. Alexander, apparently somewhat scared at the position of affairs, told Todd to leave him alone. The ahir then ended, but the following day Todd arrested Mr. i Johnston on a charge of assaulting him in the discharge of his duty. He was carried before two Magistrates. a couple of Mr. i\Iowat s J. P`s.; and right here comes in a new feature of the case---interesting as well. The magistrates had no jurisdiction further than to commit Mr. Johnston for trial. They knew or should have known this-must have known it-yet they tried the case o'~hand and sent Mr. Johnston to jail. He appealed, and the Returning Ofiicer fled to the United States. The ap- peal was heard at the last court and the jury found in favor nfMr.Johnston and sad- dled the costs upon Todd- The above is only an imperfect sketch of `one of the most glaring pieces of party tyranny and fraud ever brought to light in a Canadian court. The party have not yet -heard the last of it, and they will nd to their sorrow that even in Muskoka they will not `dare prostitute the ballot box and the magisterial bench for party purposes. _ nnvn an ..-- - -.....v_... At the banquet recently given to Sir Francis Hincks, Mr. Hague gave the following gures." They relate only to the old Province of Canada, viz.. Ontario and Quebec. In 1858 the paid-up capital of the banks was $17,588,000"; in 1883 it had reached 854,70()_000 In 1858 the circulation was only $7,800,000 _: in 1883 `it had increased (including Dominion notes) to $35,500,000. In 1858 the deposits were $9,100,000; in 1883 they had risen to $133,000,000, including , deposits in the Post Office and other savings banks and loan companies; In 1858 the discounts reached $30,100,000; in 1883 they had risen to $160,100,000. In 1858 the whole volume of exports and imports was 840,- 000,000 ; in 1868 it had increased to $130; 000,000; in 1882 it Wn about $210,000,- 000. If those figures mean anything, they mean that the Grit wail of impending ruin is unnecessary. It is not possible to con- sider the import of those figures without coming to the conclusion that Canada is upon the right road. If it takes a circu: lating medium of $35,000,000 to do a busi- ness that formerly only required $7,000,- 000, the inference is that the volume of business is ve times asplarge now as it was at that time. And so with the whole table. But even those gures, com- ing as they do from an undoubted authority will not stop the Wailing. It is the Grits law-given privilege to wai1,_ and wail he will. In the language of Tennyson the Grit exclaims: Money may come and money may go, but I go on (wailing) for- ever. EQUALIZATION OF THE ASSESS- MENT. The thieves seem to have been alarmed as some of the tools were left behind in the post oice, they not having succeeded in break- ing open the safe. That they were syste- matic burglars may be easily understood from the manner in which they performed their work. The combination lock in the safe of Messrs. At the post oflice the plunderers were not so fortunate in gaining an entrance into the safe, though alarge hole was drilled and the powder and match applied. damaging the door considerably. Some of the tools used were obtained at Lawrence Bros. carriage works, which pre- mises were previously forcibly entered. `The following night, and notwithstanding two night watchmen were on patrol, an effort was made ' to gain an entrance into Mr. G.
