The decision of .the Supreme Court, sustain- ed by the Privy Council in the case of Rus- sell v. The Queen-mark we say Russell v. The Queen and assure our contemporary that his stupidity, does not disqualify the phrase--had settled, almost` to a certainty the illegality of any Provincial License Law. In the discussion which followed enersl agree- ment was expressed with Mr. illiatns i- tion, that less" of formal grammar sho d be taught in the junior classes. As there was no discussion of the general principle of promo tion examinations. the Convention resolved itself into a committee of the whole to receive suggestions on the points-.When andwhere theyfshould be held, and how they should be conducted. The result was the `appointment of a select committee to prepare a scheme to be submitted on Saturday morning. ' FRIDAY AFTERNOON. A_vote of thanks was given to the ladies who provided the collation for the re-union-on -Thursday evening. Miss Lewis. of Toronto, was then introduced to give her lecture or, as she phrased it, her ` talk on Elocution. Miss Lewis showed that even in such a sim- ple matter is breathing) most speakers made mistakes. In reading reath should be taken in at every rhetorical pause ; that it was bad to wait to the end of the sentence and then take in a deep breath. The -lecturer then showed how the voice -was spoiled by a misuse of the vocal organs ; that in speaking a. clear jull tone could only be.-produced b opening wide the back part of the throat an speaking from the chest. She gavesome ne illustra-' tions of the way in which voice may be pro- duced by dwelling on the vowels. The fair lecturer then gave u_.` full classification of the qualities of voice, and illustrated them by re- nitimr annronriate selections in illustration. um. vi- --.I:l;l-DAY Monnmd. Miss Lewis next illustrated the three kinds of inflection rising, falling and Ollllln-' ex, and showed how valuable they were as a means of expresing the various emotions. Her shrewd remarks on manner created con- siderable amusement ;`and whilst her general rinciple ` Be natural cannot be questioned. I: may be doubted whether` the rules given allow a sufficient scope for individuality. In conclusion Miss Lewis read the parable of the Prodigal Son, is part of Mark Antony's oration over the body of Caesar, and Hamlet's sohloquy on Suicide. _ The reader stopped every few words to point out the reason for some special emplhasis or inflection. The _`talk was a rep. y- good resentation ofa subject attracting very consi erable st-tention; but it is questionable whether" it is advisable to try to cover so muchground in a single lecture. Had Miss Lewis conned herself to practical work_on the breathing exercises, and on the production of voice, we are persuaded that much more real good could have been ac- complished. A hearty vote of thanks was -awarded to Miss Lewis `on motion of Mr. Morgan, seconded by Di-._Forrest. The sub- 'ect of Phonic Reading was next introduced lay Dr. Forrest. He dwelt uponthe diiculty` of recognizing the _ various words of the luggage, but showed the! there is great iini-1 formity of sounds among diversity of ohsrac-9, tors, "The vowels are the niedium _ of sound ;' consonants merely stoppages of sound ii ): _ various parts, of the vocal; o ans.";'l`,ach` then,` `first, not the name of the otter biit its, "Value in words.
