And up thro Memory s deep ravine` Come the brooks old _song and its old time sheen, proot." Now, hold on right there. Out West they have a place for watering cattle. The cattle have to mount a platform to reach the troughs. As they step on the platform their weight presses a. lever, and this throws the water into the troughs. They have to get on the platform through faith, and this act provides the water and leads them to it. You are like a smart steer that slips around to the barnyard and peeps in the trough without getting on the platform. He nds the trough dry, of course, for it needs his weight on the platform to force the water up. He turns away disgusted, and tells everybody there s no getting on the plat- form for there's no water in the trough. . Another steer not so smart, but with more faith, steps on the platform, the .water springs into the trough, and he marches up and drinks. That's the way with religion. You can t even examine intelligently, until, you are on the platform. It you slip around the back way you ll nd the trough dry. But step on the platform,` and the water and the faith come together without any trouble-certain and sure and abund- ant, - \Vith tingle, tangle, tingle, By twos, and threes, and single, The cows are coming home; Thro violet air we see the town, And the summer sun a-sliding down, And the maple in the hazel glade ' Throws down the path nlonger shade, And the hills are growing brown; To-ring, to-mug, toringlerinzle, By threes, and fours, and single, The cows come slowly home; The same sweet sound of wordless psalm, The same sweet June day rest and calm, The same sweet smell of buds and balm, When the cows come home, uuy la!.'l ant. Whole No. 1623. The grand holiday of the spring season has come and gone, and we hope each of our readers thoroughly enjoyed the day. The day was all that could be desired, warm,` cheerful, the sun. `unclouded, but with cooling breezes to temper the heat. We have received many reports from differ- ent sources, some of which will have to be postponed until next week, and our con- tributors will forgive us if others have been somewhat curtailed. The day was quietly spent in our town, owing to the absence of a programme of sports and games, and yet we believe was thoroughly enjoyed. The_ beautiful char- actor of the weather was an_ enjoyment in itself. The town was not decked out with bunting as it should have been, though a few {lags were hoisted by private parties. The first event of the day was the parade of the Barrie Juvenile Band through the streets,` led by a mounted marshal suitably decorated. The young lads play exceed- ingly well, and were heartily applauded at different times during the day. Towards eleven o'clock the whole population of the town wended its way to the station to see the trains come in. The special from To- ronto soon arrived, consisting of fourteen coaches drawn by two engines. A great many stepped off at Barrie, the balance went on to Orillia. Many of the towns- people went to Orillia, a goodly number to Collingwood, and a few to the villages in the_more immediate neighborhood that. celebrated the day. ___L_ ,__,_,I--....I inns qusaws aummnv 2 REPORTS OF CELEBRATIONS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS. The proj ect of a dry-dock is one which has been before the people of Collingwood for many a day, and now when it is just on the eve of completion the peo- ple feel that they likewise are on the eve of completing an old and entering upon a new era of prosperity. The actual opening of the dock took place on Thursday last, when the huge steamer Oneida was run in and placed upon the stays to be repaired from the damages received by re last fall, but, it was felt that some public ceremony should mark the addition to the town of so important an adjunct, and the Queen's Birthday was selected as a most fitting time for that purpose. Halt-past one was set down as the hour for the ceremony, but it was some time later before it began. Several thousands of people were clustered about the dock when the oflicial. party ac- companied by the Collingwood and Mea- ford brass bands, and a procession of re- men, made their appearance and took up positions on the upper deck of the Oneida. Amongst the party were his Worship Mayor Dudgeon, Thomas Long, ex-M.P.P.; Orson J. Phelps, M. P.P.; George Moberly. Reeve of Collingwood; Henry A. Gray, Govem- \ ment engineer; Robt. The bay was covered with boats of every description, and sailing was thoroughly en- joyed. A. good many went shing, and in this connection `we may mention that a well known trio of local disciples of Isaac Walton visited the trout stream at Hawk- stone. Their elaborate accoutrements at- tracted a great deal of attention at the station while they were waiting for the train. They returned with three dozen trout. Fish are worth twenty-ve cents a dozen at Hawkstone, and the auditor of their accounts has asked for the details of the following item :-`.` Contingencies- 75c. It is needless to remark that the auditor has been discharged and a new one, more competent to audit 3. shing account, appointed in his place. As regards shing we may parenthically remark that this of- ce pulled across the bay to Lover s Creek and shed for clams. One hun- dred and forty of the bivalves were cap- tured and donated to the poor. Tho lnnrnuan tnnfnll in flux nnrl: nttrzintprl GOLLINGWOOD Our northern sister celebrated the day right royally.
