It looks odd, to say the least of it, to we the Globe thnslaying out plans for the Conservative party. One would think that an endeavor. (attended with very questionable success) to run its own Great Liberal Party, ought" to be is big enough contract to take in hand. The organ is, no doubt, very far-sighted and prescient as to contingencies. But really it need not fret itself about Sir John and his colleagues in the. Government, or give itself a particle of uneasiness over the situation, present or `prospective, of the Conservative party. Sir John does not by any means look or act like a man who was very anxious to hang` over the reins to another driver ; Sir Leonard Tilley has not yet shaken the Cabinet dust from his feet, nor yet has Sir Chas. Fupper been relegated to the limbo of political obscurity. .When there is any immediate prospect of all or any of these events taking place, the Globe can-9 with some show of reasonproifer its services as a guide, philosopher and friend to the Conservative chieftain, and will no doubt oe received with open arms. Just now the organ s speculations are interesting to us only in so far as-they indicate that the Globe has not lost its good opinion of the member for North Simcoe. [ts expres- sion of that good opinion is not unquali- lied, and it is also coupled with an alto- gether unfair and iuljustiable depreci- ation of other worthy men in the ranks oi Sir John's supporters, as well as with opinions on Mr, McCarthy's political cir- cumstances which it ought to know het- ter than to hold. But it is, all in all, a lotof praise for the Globe to bestow on a Conservative politician in testimony to his ability and moral worth-, and:Mr.M3 - Os1thy's friends, it may be supposed, will accept the tribute with no little gratica- tion. , Mr.McCarth_v has by other Reform journals been singled out as a member of the Commons who would be likely to rise rspidlyto preferment. He has in a great .measure justied in Parliament the luv orable predictions made of him in the press, and if he continue in `political life will no doubt in due course rise to a very high if notthe highest place in the lap ireciation and "confidence of his c l leagues; 7 But, as we have said, it is $- ther_ premature to be discussing these , matters. The Cabinet has no need at present of Mr. McCarth y '.s services, even if he were qtiite ready to offer them. Vleantime our member can congratulate himself on the circumstance that should he take oice he will-likely do so with the Globe patting him on the` back and predicting all manner of brilliant things ;. '4x'1 {1z. * i . _. i * it * In these circumstancesitis the duty. of Sir John to bring new blood into the Cabinet. select his successor, and formally indicate the future leader by plac- ing lame authority in his hands. Thus the party would learn to act under another. command, and the danger that the Pre- miership mnygo into commission would be very much lessened. Itimay be said that ' Sir John has no available lieutenant, and- it is true that of his associates in the Min~ istry not one is strong and respectable enough to lead a Government.- Buttherea is one man in the ranks who. having hither Ato refused to sit in the Cabinet, has ained _ the respect of opponents. Mr. ` alton McCarthy has not greatly distinguished himself in Parliament, and. indeed, has. made some curious blunders, but it is be- lieved that his failure may properly be as- cribed to intense preoccupation in his pro- fession. If he czmnot be made vice-Premier we know not the Tory who can. Probably the fear of losing a constituency has for- bidden Sir John to insist on Mr. Mc- Carthy s presence in the `Cabinet. but a safe seat might perhaps be foundfor him even though Mr. Whiteemight unreason- ably refuse to resign Cardwell. 1:. I understand our enterprising boat builder, Mr. Carley, has _.o'ered the use of one of his large boat houses, for club purposes, at a very low rental. Now," Mr; Editor, is `Barrie going to be behind other towns in this matter? Is there not spirit enough to establish and keep up a first-class boating club and a. fours-oared crew? or are we to rest on our oars and see Trenton, Peterboro , Windsor, Orillia, Chatliam and other towns, which are not by any means as well favored in the mat- ter of water as Barrie is, carry .01!` the a uatic honors that. should come to us? V e have some very good oarsmen in our midst, and if a club were formed and a. crew put onthe bay and kept in training, I feel condent they would give a good sccounttof themselves. A membership of about one hundred` ought to be obtained in a place like Barrie, and at, say, ve dol- lars each, per year, a nice sum would ac- crue to commence operations on : but 0. thousand dollars could easily be collected if the work be gone into with spirit, and with that sum the Kempeufeldt Boat Club " would start on a. safe aiiad sure foot- ing, and would be a source of pleasure and pride, not only to its members. but to the residents of Barrie in general. Dalton McCarthy, Q.C., of Barrie and Toronto. The wedding was of a pri- vate nature, the only guests outside of the relations of the bride and bridegroom beings Mrs. George Allen_ and Mrs. Ceyley. The wedding party entered the church shortly after the half hour had struck, and took up their places in front of the altar. The bride was dressed in a white satin watteau dress, trimmed with" Spanish `lace, and wore a. veil, which however. did not fall over her face. The bridesmaids were Miss May Bernard. sister of the bride: Miss McMicking, of Garbridge; Miss Allen, of Toronto; and little Misses McCarthy and Cartwright The bridesmpics were dressed, with the exception of the last, two in wet? tesux dresses of gured muslin with blue skirts, and were large hats covered with white muslin. The two little bridesmaids wore cream-coloured muslin dresses, with ` hats to match. The bridegroom wassupport- - d by Messrs. Hendrie and Long, of Barrie; r.
