But the same report of disaster and distress reaches us from every section. Another bad har- vest has lled the cup of sorrow which , English farmers, paying exorbitant rents to landlords, have -been compelled to, drink. Relief cannot, however, be obtained from continental nations, for they are in a position almost equally unfortunate. Large - wheat importations are usually received at ` English ports from Southern Russia and Poland. ut these will be materially reduc- by the ravages of beetles, which are prov- . mg even more destructive than the grass- hoppers of Manitoba. The crops of Spain are being eaten by a whole army of cater- - pillars, whose predilection is chifely for . maize crops, but also for vetches and many , kinds of vegetables. A similar post is ex- citing serious apprehensions in France, and although learned professors have prescrib- V edvarious antidotes, there appears to be . little hope of exterminating the insects, and in many sections dry stalks stand as a. melancholy. phantom of what should be a ne crop. He has `solved the problem of the North-east passage from the Atlantic to Beh'ring s Strait. \ It will be remembered that in the sum- mer of last year Nordenskjold left Norway for the purpose of exploring _the northern coast of Asia and entering the Pacific through Behring's Strait. For several hun- dred years the world have been interested in the attempt to find a north-east passage from the Atlantic to the Pacic,` just as it "has been interested in the endeavor to reach the North Pole. The `coast of Peru is within the region of per- petual eouthezist trade-winds, and though the Peruvian shores are on the verge of the great southeast boiler, yet. it never rains there. The reason is plain. The southeast trade-winds in the Atlantic Ocean first strike the water on the coast of Africa. Tra.ve1ling to the north west, they blow obliquely across the ocean until they 1-nnr-11 Han r-nmxf. nf Rrnzil RV this Hrnn UIUW UUIHIUUIJ U-UFUHS DILU UUUHII Lllllall. Dl1U_y reach the coast of Brazil. By this time they are laden with vapor, which they con- tinue to bear along across the continent, depositing as they go, and supplying with it the sources of the Rio de la Plato. and the `southern tributaries of the Amazon. Finally they reach the snow-capped Andes; here is wrung from them the last particle of moisture that a very low temperature can attract. ' Reaching the summit of that region, they now tumble down as cold and dry winds on `the Pacic slope beyond. Meeting with no evaporating surface, and no temperature colder than that to which they were subjected on the mountain tops, they reach the ocean. Thus we see the tops of the Andes become the reservoir from which are supplied the rivers of Chili and Peru. LUMBER FROM Srmnv.-Mr. S. H. Ham- ilton, of Bushnell, 111., has discovered a process for making hard wood lumber out of `common straw, with all the e'ects of pol- ish and nish which is obtainable on the hardest of black walnut and mahogany, at as little cost as clear pine lumber can be manufactured for. The process of manu- facture as explained by Mr. Hamilton is as follows: Ordinary straw board, such as is manufactured at any paper-mill, is used for the purpose. As many sheets are taken as arorequired to `make the thickness of lumber desired. These sheets are passed through afchemical solution, which thorough- ly softens up the ber and completely saturates it. The whole is then pressed through a_ succession of rollers, dried and hardened during the passage, as olished, and comes out of the other en of the machine hard, dry lumber, ready for use. It is claimed that the chemical properties hardening in the ber entirely prevent water soaking, and render the lumber com- bustible only. in very hot re. The harden- ed fmish on the outside" also makes it inr- pervious to water. The samples exhibited couldhardl y be told from hard wood lumber. and in sawing it the difference could not be detected. It is susceptible of a very high polish, and samples of imitation of marble, malmgany, etc., were shown, which might deceive the most experienced eye. Not only does Mr. Hamilton claim a sub- stitute for lumber in sash, doors and blinds, and nishing stuff, but also as a substitute for black-walnut and other woods in the manufacture of all kinds of ne furniture, cofns, etc.,and also an excellent substitute for marble-top. tables, mantle-pieces, etc. He claims that it will not warp in _tho least. --Farmer's M'aga:inc. ORIGIN or Pr.moL1-:U.\r.--This is one of the questions that has long agitated the scientic world, and upon the answer to it more depends than seems to at first sight. If we know its source we can fairly deter ,mine as to the nature and extent of the supplies, and as to where to look for the-H1. The Scientic American says: `.`Some ha\'c thought that the oils have been produced by a slow distillation during the process of coal formation. A fatal objection,.howe-ver. to this theory is found in the fact thrt Great Brita.in,which has immense coal-buds. contains nothing of the kind, though sup- posed traces have been fonnd here and there. The siluri_an and devonian rocks, which contain the sources of most of the oil-wells now in existence, have great quantities of fossil remains, and this has suggested the theory that the oils have resulted from their decomposition . Prof. Mendeljcff thinks that on the first formation of the earth vast reservoirs of in- organic iron and carbon existed in the in- terior of the globe. ' These were reached by the water condensing on the newly-form- ed land and percolating beneath its surface. The heat decomposed the water into its component parts, oxy en and hydrogen, the rst forming with t 10 iron oxide of iron. L1... `all.-- -'-JLL LL- -__L-_. _.-A__l_..__ __.1 UIPULIUIID Path! If this theory be the correct one, there still exist in the centre of the earth reservoirs of petroleum that are to the sources as yet known as the ocean is to the spring, whose waters finally nd u. resting-place in . its bosom. Dr. T. Sten'y Hunt, of Massachusetts, propounded in 186] a. theory to which he still adheres. He thinks that many of the animated beings of early ages were half vegetable, half animal, and that the decqn- osition of their tissues roduced whstie nown as mineral oil. ertain magnetic oliferous limestones have been found to contain 41 per cent. of their bulk of petro- leum. A square mile of these thirty-ve feet thick would yield nearly 8,000,000 . barrels, and ssthe area. of these rocks is very great, they may contain supplies cal- culated to lust an indenite period of time. The subject is one well worthy the atten- ion of all interested in oil-wells. . nu iuuius LIAJHS usYs.-'i.'nere ha! been continual rejoicing among the alicted since the first introduction of Arnica and Oil Lini- ment.
