HOW JOHN YOUNG LI\'_F.D AND DXED-A SICKEN4 ISO P[('TL'RE OF l'()\'ERTY, |Jl .l.'NKEN_NESS AND FILTH. Never before in the history of Barrie, `and perhaps never before in the history of Cnnmla, has a human being heen known to have died umler':ircumst:mces more shot,-kin"g than those which attended the demise of John Young, of Allamlale, who was found dead on Saturday afternoon. The p:nrtic1ilars of the case, which are almost too revolting to chronicle,` are briey as follows :- 5 us: nun. u .. . On the afternoon in question, word was brought I)r. ('rookshank that the dead body of old Jolm Young had been found, and that the presence of a coroner was, perlmps, neces- sary. A visit to the place revealed the truth of the informatiau, and the body was formally. taken charge of and an inquest held on Mon- day. Before proceeding with it, however, our: reporter, in company with the coroner, visited the scene of death, a frame house a few rods back from the town line `on the outskirts of Allandale. ~ The sight which greeted the view on entering the place, almost beggars descrip- tion Lyiug on the ground, half naked, was the body of the. old man, the limbs rigid in death, the face turned up to the light distort- ed with the death agony, and the whole ap- pearance of the corpse presenting one of the most hideous, revolting spectac es that one could conceive. And what intensified the sen- sation of horror which the onloolrerexpoin _ ienced, and made him turn from the fearful picture with nauseau, were the surroundings. Not an article ot furniture was to be seen in the room-n0tapartic1e of bedding, unless . the few tattered rags and two old half-lled bags on which the corpse lay, could be so de- was in a state too filthy _to admit of adequate description. Dirt of the most disgusting nature was to be seen in every corner--remnants of old bones, rags, broken glass, and, as if to complete the picture of awful {squalor and misery, a black bottle, empty, but only too well evidencing what its contents. had been, lay beside the dead man, as though just drop- ped from his rrasp when the death struggle seized him. Am this spectacle, one could not but reflect, as he passed out from the room sickened almost to fainting, is witnessed in a. ' civilized, Christian country and in a respect- able community, in this, the year of our Lord, 1876 ! \Vell might the onlookcr doubt the advancement in civilization which the world is said to be making. when gazing on such a sight. V And well might he question the sin- cerity of many who profess humanity, philan- thropy and religion, but who fail to discover the means for its exercise tho,ugh_ almost at their very door. "rho nmmqt, Imhl at Boon s hotel. failed to slgnatcd-not thesign of a fire. The chamber` their door. "The inquest, held at Boon hotel, elicit any evidence to show from what cause deceased had died. Francis Birtle, the occu- pant of the house in theroom of which the death occurred, together with his wife Bridget and their little son, was examined The gist of the evidence was to the effect that de- ceased had been. very . intemperatemalinost always drunk. He ' had occupied the room during the whole winter without, a fire or other protection than his clothes afforded. He had come in the night before evidently very drunk, and not awaking he had been called in the morning, and about noon,- and no further at tention paid him. About four o clock he was heard groaning, and the woman of the house with her little girl cooked some food for him, but on entering the room with it they dis- covered the old man dead. It being deemed . necessary, a post mm-to/n was held by Dr. Mc- Conkey, which revealed the fact that the brain and lungs of deceased were congested. This, taken in connection with the evidence as to V the life the man had lived, brought a verdict from the jury of death from congestion of the ' brain,` induced by exposure, inteinperance, and lack of proper nourislnnent, John Young, better known around here as Brigham, was rather a remaikablo man. He was at `one time in the Glasgow police force, and subsequently kept a store in '.l`oronto, He came to these pH.l`t8 about twenty years ago, since when he has lived a hard live, and of late years the life of a va- grant. He was evidently a man of intelligence and good education, and at one time possessed. considerable means. He has a son living in Allandale and a daughter in Toronto. S'I`EAIsL\'G CLOTHES.
