In the summer of 1870, a gentleman of modest hearing, but of courtly man- ners, arrived at St. Paul, Minn.,- and H wrote the name G. Gordon, Scotland upon the register of the principal hotel. He had no letters of introduotion, made norstatement-s concerning himself, but paid his bills promptly. The arrival of letters from abroad bearing armorial crests, set the gossips going. While efforts were ` making to discover who he reall.y .was,he hadplaced himself in correspondence with the oicers of the _ Northern. Gordon, who ended his life" byoommit -ing suicide in.-`Manitoba on Saturday? last,lik_e many _others of his cle ss,might; have .'gained a distinguished position in` almost anycountry had his talentsbeen directed toward the accomplishment, of T legitimate ends. `He was wellfeduc'a_.t- ed,.had a ne address, and much per- sonal magnetism. If any reliance may be placed in the statementgof a` woman. who lived in New-Jersey in 1872, and "far alight knownjto the contrary, may still-be living tlere, he was the son of moderately ` .w.ell7-to-do parents, who, when he was javmere la_d,resided on the borders"ot' Scotland. When engaged in . study withihis brothers-,he had been in t u the habit of frequently expressing a , desire to be wealthy and noble. As years wentby, he seemed to become more and more settled in his determin- ation to cut a lordly gure in the world or die in the effort to obtain the means to enable .him to do so. iWhen hewas old enough to begin the world for him self the position of clerk in a mercan- tile house was procured for him. The position, howevsr, was not to his taste. The possession of money in small sums zriadehim long to have `more, and he nally gave up his situation in order to End a readier means of. accomplishing his purpose. After that but little was heard of him by those who had known him in his boyhood. It is supposed that having decided to play the role of a Lord, he contrived to secure the ac- quaintance ofa real one, in order to study his part carefully. He were ex- pensive clothes, handsome Jewellery, and soon succeeded in inducing all he . came in contact with to believe he was a man of wealth. In England, persons who are termed condence swimllers in this country, very often worm their way into the books of the tradesmen thrniigh the agency ofclergymen. Gor- don made a very. liberal use of this plan. Among other clergynien whose friendship he assiduously cultivated, was a.Mr. Simpson, of (llenisla, For- iarshirc, Scotland. In 1868 he was known as llubert Hamilton. In` the beginning of 1869 _he introduced hin_i- sell to the reverend gentleman named as Lord Gloncairn, a land owner ol great wealth, and in the course of a month` or two had so ingratiated him- self into his good graces, that Mr. Simp- son was delighted to have an opportii- nity to mention the fact of his intimacy with the noble Lord, when in con- versation with the firm of Marshall la 00., jewellers, of Edinburgh. Pretty soon Gordon presented himself at Mar- shall's, and opened "a `little account. By January, 1870, he had run up a bill of $1,000. On the occasion ol one visit he informed Mr. Marshall that he was the possessor of estates in Englnnd, lre land and Scotland; that he had an im- inensc revenue, and that a Mr. Patter,- son, of Lincoln's Inn, London, wasihis solicitor, and attended to all his busi- ness.. ` Not long afterwards Gordon returned to London and began togive extensive orders to jewellers `A diamond dealer named Kellar, whom he had thus fav- ored, was referred for information to the Scotch jewellers with whom he assert ed he had been d a".ng' for several years. Kellar wrote to Marshall dz Co. in the regular way of biisrness. 'l'he mention ofseveral years aroused the suspicious of Mr. l`hos. Smith, of the latter rm, who, not to betortured by doubts,~immediately went to London, and called upon Mr. Patterson, who evidentlyhad unbounded faith iii`Lord Glencairn, for he promptly advised ' Mr. Smith not to do anything to dis- please his lordship or he might prevent him from being one of his best custom- -ers. Mr. Smith showed such a disin- olination to believe that Mr. Patterson induced Lord (`:lencairn to return moh articles? ofjewellerv as he had on y `i:~.n_d,"and give a check` for the remain- der of the amount. Mr. Patterson pledged himself as security that the check would be honored by the 2511 of March, 1570. S_nhsequently.,G`or- don, or Lord Glenoairn, by presents oi ctstly Jewelleryto the -family of Mr Patterson, so far inuenced thelatter that he complied with his request for advances of money to the amount of nearly $35,000. It was only after he had given the last 3-000 that he began tosuspect him; Gordon had told him that he was about `to pay a short visit. to Edinburgh, and that he Wishedlto close his` account at Marshall & Co s. Mr. iPatterson,as soon as he had begun to have suspicions, dispatched in clerk to Edinburgh to makeenquiries. M enn- while Gordon had ed, no one knew whither. The victimsare quite mim- erous both in Edinburgh and London.` The jewellers of London alone, on the strength of his title, and the` represen- tations that he was an intimate friend of the Duke of-llamilton and Marquis V of Ha'sting.-=,had given him credit to the extent of $50,000. Siibsequently the noblemen inentioiied,on inquiry ofthem, declared that they knew-of no such person. This was the -end of Gordon s 0 career in-Great Britain. 0 V"LOI.{D G_T0`RDON Gomon. the N. Y. Stmhan,;and began law pro- oeedings against Gould, who, In turn, took proceedings agemst him for the recovery of the Oil Creek stock, which 1: was charged he had procured by means of false representationr. Gor- don was a-r ssted, and would have been sent to L'.d`c_w-stteet geol but for the late Horece`F, Clerk and A.F. The oiceof the Northern Pacic was agitated. Here was a Lor.d---a Lord wanted. a little bit at land--50,00,0 acres, for benevolent purposes. He would like to inspect it, of course, be-V fore purchasing. So they equipped a [t was the last of.August "when the princely retinue started from St. Paul to the Northern Pacic, under .com- mand of Col."Loomis, the deviser and Can the glories of that caravnnbe told? It was equipped for a lord. There were half a dozen teams with a carriage for -Vlilord, besides the omnibuses, arnbul ances, &c. There were twelve man to do the manual labour, with a French cook and darkey `waiters in linen aprons and white silk gloves, and the loyal table was unloaded from the bag- gage-waggons atevery meal, i-nd set out with fresh napkins, silver plate`, and china-unha`ppily china-ware with- out the Gordon arms. Ah, it was gorgeous! Every luxury that the markets of Chicago, St. Paul, and Miri- neapolis could produce was there; and all the game of the boundless prairie, from woodcock to buffalo. Champagne three times a day. When the caravan had skirted Oak Lake, Milord wanted to see Fergus Falls, and when it had done Fergus Falls, he longed for More- head, and when it had digested More- head he yearned to visit the glimpses of the moon beyond the Red River. So on and on the deluded Loomis pressed, overroweling the sable waiters, ever cajoling and reproaching, the French cook, ever perspiring between anticipa-_ tion and apprehension, , and ever send- ing relays of messengers for more pot- ted grouse, more cranberry ]elly, and more champagne. Meantime he studied the sphinx Milord, and conclud- ed that he was a queer cross between the lofty and the lowly, he was half tord and halftlaokey ; perhaps his fath- er was an EnglishtEarl and his mother an lrish chamber-maid. In November they came back half frozen, Milord had` selected his 50,000 acres in Otter Tail and Beaver Counties. The Northern Pacic Railroad Company footed the bills-$l5,000 -for `two, months. The absurd farce was at an end. Milord Gordon did not buy the land for his poor tenants, and he never again mentioned his benevolent sister to anybody. A _ -I Gordon spent much time in studying the various railroad schemes of the country, and in gaining D. thorough knowledge of the leading men of en- tcrprise; In 1871 he came to New York, evidently with the intention of making his inlormation pay well. . He formed the acqunintanceol inconsider- able number of prominent men here, among others that of the late Horace Greeley and Horace F. Clark. He set- tlcd himself in luxuriously furnished apartments at the Metropolitan Hotel, entertained in princely style, and gave all who approached him the idea that there was no limit to his wealth. While residing in Minnesota he had made the acquaintance of Mrs. Belden, the wife ol a former partner of the late, James Fisk, Jr. Mrs. Belden gave a glowing account of him to her husband, and her husband gave a description ol him to Jay Gould, who was at that time in hourly "danger ollosing his position as President of the Erie Rail- way. Gordon, `it seems, had represent- ed that he held certicates for some t?o,m0 shares of Erie stock, worth about :f43n,UOU,UtJ0,ithat had in part been giveii to him by friends in England, who desired to have the Erie road placed under honest management. ' He had cunning enough to -know that it would not be well for him to Gould. He waited for the latter to call upon him, which he eventually ` did do in March, 1872-, and was so con- vinced of'Gordon s power to force a change of management in Erie, that he. wroteand placed in his hands the (ol- lowing letter:- ' - goto' ux SUIIIS lulu vuul |. ILLUUHIPRHY Wllh. Wm. M. Tweed, Justiee,'Shundley,_ and Superintendent of Police Kelso. he went to the Metropolitan Hotel, where Gording was staying, and sent Belden to inform him (Gordon) that unless he, irgmedmte-ly gave up everything he had received from h1rn,-( 3ou1d,) that he `would be rnilroaded to prison that Very night. Under this threat Gordon's knees grew weak. Here-'_ turned, then and there, $200,000 in currency, and gave an order` on his `brokers at Philadelphia for Oil Creek atoolr worth as much more.` Subse- quently he telegraphed to his brokers at Philadelphia and warned` them not to honour his order for the delivery of the stock, as it had been proeuredfrom him by threats. ' New York, March 9." Subsequently, upon the condition- that Gordon would aid him to keep the reins at power in his hands,.he sur- rendered to his care nearly $500,000 worth of'notes, bonds, and stocks. Early In April of the same year Gould, having had a suspicion that Gordori had, as he expressedoit, -fooled him, endeavoured to get back his -notes, bonds, and stocks without thtffoxmaiity of going into court. Gordon was anbse-ll quently thrown into prison at Fortv, Garry on charges of purinry and forgery, but, through the failure of the Crown- to prosecute, he was recently liberated. No sooner had he . gained his liberty `than he went to reside at a plane oalled Headingly, apparently with the inten- 1 tion of making it a permanent retreat 1 from the cares of the world. It was while he was enjoying the quiet of this place that he was pounced upon ` i p. by two detectives, who had come all the` way from England to take him back to answer for his crimes. With ' a lingering dread of the United States he asked the officers not to go with him that way. Upon their promise to com- ply he went to his room to get ready for his journey.
